ERROL FLYNN BIOGRAPHY
Actor. Nicknamed “the Baron”, son of Theodore Thomas Flynn, eminent biologist and oceanographer, from a very young age he led a fairly unregulated life passing from one school to another. Before landing in the cinema, he practiced many professions: gold digger, navigator, boxer, pearl fisher. In the first half of the 1930s he decided to move to America due to problems with the taxman. After a short internship he arrived at Warner and in 1935 he was lucky enough to replace Robert Donat in the title role in “Captain Blood”, a film made legendary by the direction of Michael Curtiz. In this film the actor embodies the handsome, Gascon, extroverted and athletic hero, which makes him a star already at the age of twenty-six. In that same year he married the actress Lili Damita, with whom he had a son. At this point a very happy artistic period begins for him: he appears in memorable films such as “The Charge of the 600” (1936) by Curtiz, “The Prince and the Poor” (1937) by William Keighley and “The Adventures of Robin Hood” (1938), films where he re-proposes and perfects the type of hero that will characterize his acting style. He also successfully ventured into the western genre with the famous film “The Story of General Custer” (1941). Two years later, after the divorce from Damita, he marries another actress, Nora Eddington, with whom he will have two children and who will be by his side in the film “The Adventures of Don Giovanni” (1948). As his career progresses Flynn improves his acting becoming capable of deep and subtle expressions and interpretations, as seen in the film “On the Silver River” (1948), where he gives body and face to Michael McComb, a complex and negative hero, very much modern. However, Warner never fully exploits these abilities, preferring to continue to propose the model of the hero created by Flynn that has so much hold on the public. His private life is no less daring than his films. In 1950, after another divorce, he remarries with Patrice Wymore, also an actress, with whom she has a son. His passion for women often puts him in trouble, so much so that he is even accused of rape. His other passions are fighting and rowing. His lifestyle leads him to age rapidly: at forty he is marked by alcohol and suffering from a form of malaria. Despite this, he continues to work almost to the end, shoots his last film “The roots of the sky” in 1958 and dies of a heart attack the following year.
