BIOGRAPHY OF JANE FONDA

Actress. A Hollywood legend tells that Bette Davis, on the set of “Daughter of the Wind”, had to shoot some scenes talking to an empty wall because her partner, Henry Fonda, had to leave in a hurry to New York to attend the birth of the his eldest daughter. As a girl Jane didn’t seem interested in retracing the footsteps of her famous parent. She studied in Vassar and then in Europe, finally returned to the USA with the intention of working as a model. The meeting with Lee Strasberg instead convinced her to attend her classes at the Actors’ Studio, and her film debut came in 1960 with “On tiptoe”. In the 1960s, Fonda met Roger Vadim, who became her first husband in 1963 and who directed her in some films that managed to make her a sex symbol; the most important among them was “Barbarella” (1968). To the surprise of many (and above all of her father), she was the first American actress of any importance to appear naked in a foreign film: the film was “Pleasure and Love” (“La Ronde”) directed by Vadim in ’64. His strong, strong-willed, nonconformist character also came to light when, in the early 1970s, he became a political activist to protest the Vietnam War. Her visit to Hanoi and her pro-North Vietnamese propaganda earned her the nickname “Hanoi Jane”, but also made her disliked by many. In the meantime, however, her acting career reached remarkable goals: after “A barefoot in the park” (1967), in 1969 she obtained the first of her seven Oscar nominations for “Aren’t horses killed like this?” by Sidney Pollack, and in ’71 she won the Oscar with “A Call for Inspector Klute”, for the role of the prostitute Bree Daniel. The second statuette would come to her in 1978 for Hal Ashby’s “Returning Home”. After the marriage with Vadim, in 1973 she married in second marriage with Tom Hayden, a career politician with a past as a pacifist. During the same decade, he took part in Godard’s “Master’s Crack, Everything’s Good”, George Cukor’s “The Garden of Happiness”, Fred Zinneman’s “Giulia”, “California Suite” directed by Herbert Ross, and “Chinese Syndrome”. During the 1980s, Jane Fonda began to thin out her appearances on the big screen, to the point of completely erasing them, while she devoted herself more and more often to making videos of aerobic gymnastics exercises, de facto inventing a second and very successful career. As far as cinema is concerned, the decade opened with “Sul lago d’oro”, 1981, the first and only time in which he acted in a film alongside his father, and ended with “Lettere d’amore” on the scourge of illiteracy in USA, (directed in 1990 by Martin Ritt), which remained his last film for a long time. In 1991 Jane Fonda married communications mogul Ted Turner in a third wedding, a marriage that was officially ended in early 2000. In 2005, she successfully returned to the screen in the title role in the hilarious “Mother-in-law’s Monster”. in which his daughter-in-law is Jennifer Lopez. In 2007 he gave a cinema lesson during the second Rome International Film Festival.
