BIOGRAPHY OF ILEANA GHIONE
Actress. In the 1950s he studied acting at the Silvio D’Amico Academy of Dramatic Art in Rome with Sergio Tofano. Thanks to his particular acting skills, with a propensity for drama, in the Sixties he established himself as one of the most famous faces of Italian television with the participation in several television dramas including “Jane Eyre” (1957), “Una tredia americana” (1962), “David Copperfield” (1965) – all directed by Anton Giulio Majano -, “The Buddenbrooks” and “The heiress” – both in 1971, directed by Edmo Fenoglio -, “Portrait of a lady” (1975, directed by Sandro Sequi), “Una donna” (1977, directed by Gianni Bongioanni). Even more important are his theatrical performances (for example Sophocles, Shakespeare, Alfieri, Ibsen, Cechov, Wilde, Shaw and O’Neill) and not least the radio ones. In 1980, together with her husband Christopher Axworthy, she became a theatrical entrepreneur buying and re-adapting an old theater in via delle Fornaci, renamed Teatro Ghione, with a stable company open to the inclusion of young talents. In 2005, during a performance of Euripides’ “Ecuba” she fell ill and was taken to the San Filippo Neri Hospital, where she died of an aneurysm in the aorta. In 2001, for her commitment in the Arts, she was awarded the title of Grand Officer of the Italian Republic by Carlo Azeglio Ciampi.
