BIOGRAPHY OF ADOOR GOPALAKRISHNAN
Director, screenwriter. He is perhaps the most important director of Indian cinema. Belonging to a family linked by tradition to dance acting, he began acting at an amateur level when he was only eight years old. During his academic career he wrote and directed over twenty plays. Graduated in Political and Economic Sciences, he later studied screenwriting and film directing at the Film Institute of Pune, where he graduated in 1965. In the same year he founded the Chitralekha Film Society of Trivandrum and the Chitralekha Film Cooperative, both of which are very important for development. of film culture in Kerala. He has written and directed nine films and over twenty-five shorts and documentaries. His first film, ‘Swayamvaram’ (1972) won the national award for best film, best director, best cameraman and best actress. ‘Kathapurushan’ (1995) doubled his success by winning the national award for best film ever made in all languages of India. For the third film, ‘Elippathayam’, he was awarded the British Film Institute award for making the most original and imaginative film of 1982. He received five times the International Film Critics Prize (FIPRESCI), for the films’ Mukhamukham ‘(1984),’ Anantaram ‘(1987),’ Mathilukal ‘(1990),’ Vidheyan ‘(1993) and Kathapurushan’ (1995). by Padmashri, one of the four most important titles that the Indian state attributes to eminent personalities of science and culture. The collection of his essays, ‘The World of Cinema’ won the award for the best film book of the year in 1984. He has also written two essays on theater.
