BIOGRAPHY OF ALAN BATES

Actor. The son of an insurer and a housewife who are passionate about music who encourage him to become a pianist, little Alan at the age of 11 already knows he wants to become an actor. Study at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts in London, then join the English Stage Company at the Royal Court Theater. His debut in the theater took place in 1956 and in the same year he obtained, with “Remember with anger” by Osborne, his first great success on the stage. From that moment he enters the circle of the “Angry Young Men” (so-called ‘Angry Young Men’) engaging in works by Pinter and Shaffer. In 1960 he made his screen debut with Tony Richardson’s “Gli sfasati” and two years later he starred in the film adaptation of Pinter’s “The Guardian”. During the sixties his career is on the rise thanks to the remarkable success of “Zorba the Greek” (1965); “Away from the madding crowd” (1967) “Women in love” (1969), in which her great versatility emerges. In 1970 he married actress Victoria Ward and the following year Benedick and Tristan were born. Among the many films played in the following two decades we remember “Messenger of love” (1971) alongside Julie Christie, “Celebrazione” (1974), “Una donna tutto solo” (1977), and Zeffirelli’s “Hamlet” ( 1990). This happy period is followed by another one marked by grief: in 1990 he loses his son Tristan to an asthma attack and in 1992 his wife also dies. After Tristan’s death, Bates and his daughter Benedick found the Tristan Bates Theater in London and devote himself completely to the work to try to overcome the two tragedies. His latest performances are Altman’s “Grotesque” (1995) and “Gosford Park” (2001). He died in December 2003 in a London hospital of liver cancer at the age of 69.
