BIOGRAPHY OF ALBERT FINNEY
Throughout his long career, Albert Finney has impressed critics with his ability to step into a role and characterize the character, regardless of age, nationality or profession. On the stage and on the set, in more than forty years of career, Finney has been John Paul II, Hercule Poirot, Scrooge, and many other characters, with authentic and convincing interpretations. Finney was born in Salford, a town in Lancashire, England. After graduating from the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts in 1955, he began his theatrical career acting Shakespeare and quickly earning a coveted place as a replacement for the great Laurence Olivier in Shakespearean productions in Stratford upon Avon. On one occasion he has the opportunity to replace him in the main role in “Coriolano”, earning many awards that open the doors of cinema to him. His growth in a working-class environment, amidst social injustices and economic difficulties, helped him in the preparation of the character of the nonconformist worker Arthur Seaton in the film “Saturday night, Sunday morning”, a milestone in British realist cinema, with which he won the Bafta for Best Emerging Actor 1960. His success with audiences and critics earned him the main role in Tony Richardson’s “Tom Jones”, an adaptation of the homonymous story by Henry Fielding, winner of four Oscars and the Volpi Cup for Best Actor at the Venice Film Festival 1963. Parallel to his film career, Finney continued his theatrical career, with the National Theater Company at the Old Vic in London, interpreting both works by Shakespeare and other authors. His next film, “Two for the Road”, sees him opposed to Audrey Hepburn, in an interpretation that again earns him critical acclaim. In his subsequent roles he ranges from the greedy Scrooge in “Dickens’ Most Beautiful Story” to Poirot in “Murder on the Orient Express” (nominated for the 1974 Academy Awards for Best Actor), to the French gentleman in Ridley Scott’s “The Duelists”, to the Shakespearean actor of “Scene Servant”, with whom he won at the Berlin Film Festival for Best Actor 1984. Between the end of the 80s and during the 90s, Finney ventured into very different roles, working mainly in small independent productions, such as “Il Crocevia della morte”, “A man of no importance”, “Dangerous deceptions”. The year 2000 sees him again the protagonist of a mega production, alongside Julia Roberts in “Erin Brockovich” with which he gets the nomination for Best Supporting Actor at the Golden Globe, the Bafta and the Oscars 2000. He has been married since 1957 to 1961 with Jane Wenham and from 1970 to 1978 with Anouk Aimée.
