Antigay lawmaker admits curling up on toilet holding sword during Capitol uprising

An anti-Gay Republican has just admitted to barricading himself in a bathroom with a 160-year-old sword during the January 6 uprising on the United States Capitol.

According to the New York Times, Arkansas Representative Bruce Westerman said he fled into the office of Minority House Leader Kevin McCarthy after MAGA militia violated the Capitol building. At one point, the GOP chief’s security team rushed McCarthy to a safer location, but for some reason they left Westerman behind to fend for themselves.

The New York Times reports:

Following the evacuation of the House chamber on January 6, Mr. McCarthy retired to his office on the Capitol with a colleague, Rep. Bruce Westerman, Republican of Arkansas. When it became clear that rioters were breaking in, McCarthy’s security service insisted he leave. But Mr. Westerman was left in Mr. McCarthy’s internal working area, he said in a recent interview. To protect himself, Mr Westerman said he requisitioned a Civil War sword from an office display, barricaded himself in Mr McCarthy’s private bathroom and waited for the siege to end in s squatting on the toilet.

That’s right, folx. Westerman grabbed a dusty old sword off the wall then hid in McCarthy’s private bathroom, crouched over the toilet so no one could see his feet, and just waited for the chaos to end.

Why he chose to volunteer for this story is a guess for anyone, as it doesn’t look good on either him or McCarthy. But dignity has never exactly been the strong point of the Republican Party.

During the commotion, presumably while curling up in the bathroom, Westerman took to Twitter to condemn the crowd, writing: “Americans will always disagree on politics, but violently storm the US Capitol. nation is absolutely unacceptable. People are hurt. Sufficient.”

Americans will always disagree on politics, but violently storming our nation’s Capitol is absolutely unacceptable. People are hurt. Sufficient.

Westerman is about as anti-Gay as they come. Not only does he oppose same-sex marriage, but he also opposes civil union.

He also doesn’t think LGBTQ people should be included in non-discrimination protections, and he thinks trans people shouldn’t be allowed to use the bathroom.

Oh, and he says businesses should have the legal right to deny services to LGBTQ people based on religious objections.

And he supports Donald Trump’s trans military ban.

And he opposes the equality law.

Ever since curling up on the toilet with a sword story erupted, Westerman has become the laughing stock of the internet. Here’s what people are saying …

Republican Congressman Bruce Westerman smashed an old Civil War sword in a display case and clutched it with white knuckles while squatting on a toilet in the bathroom in Kevin McCarthy’s office while hiding rioters from the Capitol. At least something good happened that day. pic.twitter.com/BXyWTkEEnb

Bruce Westerman (R) Ark requisitioned a Civil War sword that barricaded itself in McCarthy’s private bathroom and waited for the siege to end, crouching on the toilet. A week later, he voted against Trump’s impeachment. ????????

A spokesperson for Westerman told media he would no longer comment on his terrifying experience during the insurgency, which he called “madness” and “a truly shameful moment for our country.”
