After graduating from the Hochschule für Fernsehen und Film in Munich, in 1973 he founded his first production company, Solaris Film, turning his attention above all to German ‘new authors’. He has the merit of being among the first to recognize the talent of Wim Wenders (“False movement”; 1975), then of Edgar Reitz (“Zero Hour”; 1977) and Wolfgang Petersen (“Die Konsequenz”; 1977). Among the most successful productions: “Cristiana F. – We the boys of the Berlin zoo” (1981) by Uli Edel, “The Neverending Story” (1984) by Wolfgang Petersen, “The Name of the Rose” (1986) by Jean -Jacques Annaud, the co-production “Nowhere in Africa” (2001), which won the Oscar for best foreign film, and the “Resident Evil” saga, which smashed the box office all over the world. In 2004 he collaborated on the screenplay of “The fall – Hitler’s last days” by Oliver Hirschbiegel, an experiment that he repeated in 2006 with “Perfume – Story of a murderer” by Tom Tykwer and in 2008 with “The Baader Meinhof gang” by Edel.
