BIOGRAPHY OF CARMELO BENE
Actor, director, author and storyteller. Born in 1937. After having completed his classical studies at a college of the Jesuit fathers, in 1957 he enrolled at the Academy of Dramatic Art in Rome, but after a year he abandoned it because he considered it ‘useless’. He made his debut in theater in 1959 with Albert Camus’ “Caligola” directed by Alberto Ruggiero. Founded his own company, together with Lydia Mancinelli, made up of often improvised actors, during the 60s he gave life to a series of experimental shows in which he twists and manipulates classic texts such as “Hamlet” by Shakespeare, “Salomè” by Oscar Wilde or “Pinocchio” by Carlo Collodi, many of which staged at the theater off Beat ’62. Between the 60s and 70s he also experimented with film directing, directing “Nostra Signora dei Turchi” (1968), winner of the Special Jury Prize at the Venice Film Festival, based on the book of the same name written by him in 1965, “Capricci “(1969),” Don Giovanni “(1970),” Salomè “(1972),” Un Amleto di meno “(1973), his latest effort for the big screen, where he would later appear neither as an actor nor as a director. Among his greatest successes with audiences and critics, in which the fundamental element on which his acting art is based is the ‘voice’, the representation of Byron’s symphonic poem “Manfred” (1979) with music by Shumann and the “Lectura Dantis” (1981) from the Torre degli Asinelli in Bologna. In 1989 he was director of the Biennale di Teatro in Venice, he who had been an opponent of the official theater, but was later dismissed on charges of waste and lack of professionalism because he had become an advocate of a theater without spectators. From 1990 to 1994 he disappeared from the scene because, as he himself said, “he was unemployed of himself”. In 1995 the Bompiani publishing house published his ‘work omnia’ in the Classics series, including the autobiography “I appeared to the Madonna” (first published in 1983).
