CHARLIE HUNNAM BIOGRAPHY
Born the April 10, 1980 in Newcastle upon Tyne, England, Charlie Hunnam he spent his youth in the English village of Melmerby, where he had moved at the age of twelve, when his parents divorced. A little ‘the family situation, the mother in fact remarried with another man, and a little’ also the change of home, made the social relations of the young Charlie very difficult, as well as his academic performance which was certainly not the best. Hunnam, however, proves himself in the artistic disciplines, a passion that leads him to enroll at the Cumbria College of Art and Design, where he graduates in Theory and History of Cinema. The young aspiring actor dreams of the lights of Hollywood and, while trying various castings, tries to support himself with small jobs. On the occasion of one of these occasional jobs, that is while he was dressed as a clown in a shoe shop, he is noticed by the production manager of the English TV series for children Byker Grove (1998); Hunnam was around eighteen and good-looking, it won’t take long to go from the show’s three episodes to the big screen.
It is only 1999 when the English actor receives his first film role with What happened to Harold Smith? (1999) of Peter Hewitt, but the real turning point in these early years of his career was his participation as a protagonist in the television series Queer as Folk (1999). Thanks to this interpretation, Hunnam’s notoriety expands, crossing borders and the ocean, and in a short time he also reaches the United States, where the actor moves to try the big leap in Hollywood. The first works remain in the context of the small screen with the series Young Americans (2000) and Undeclared (2001); it will take 2002 for Hunnam to appear in US film productions, first taking part in the thriller Abandon – Mysterious murders (2002) with Katie Holmes and then as the protagonist in the dramatic Nicholas Nickelby (2002), adaptation of the novel of the same name by Charles Dickens. The following year he was directed by Anthony Minghella in a minor role in the western Cold Mountain (2003), where he finds himself working alongside great personalities of international cinema, such as Jude Law, Nicole Kidman is Renée Zellweger. Hunnam’s apprenticeship, which was not so tiring, thanks to his talents, culminates in 2005 with the cult film Hooligans (2005), which most of all in these early years marked his career, promptly launching him among the most promising English actors of the third millennium. Hunnam is Pete Dunham, a young English thug, like the interpreter himself, at the head of the West Ham United hooligans, involving good guy Matt, played by Elijah Wood, in the violent turn. At the height of his fame, the actor consolidates his success with the role of Patric, a member of the militant group Fishes, in The children of men (2006). Hunnam has always called this the closure of a trilogy of violent characters, which began with the sadistic psychopath Lieutenant Bosie from Cold Mountain and continued with Pete’s ferocity in Hooligans.
For a long time it is the TV that involves him most with the main role in Sons of Anarchy (2008), a series in which he is the motorcyclist and war veteran John Teller and with which he also makes himself known to a different circle of public, that of the cathode ray tube. Despite serving for seven seasons, until 2014, on the show, the actor continues to pursue his commitment in the cinema, also receiving engagements for films of international importance, such as Pacific Rim (2013) of Guillermo del Toro, where he is the protagonist, chosen by the director for his appearance as a “good boy”. Del Toro also relies on him for horror Crimson Peak (2015), this time entrusting him with the part of the hero who tries to save Mia Wasikowska from the turbulent psyche of the characters of Tom Hiddleston is Jessica Chastain. Hunnam has now entered the Olympus of Hollywood stars, thanks to his acting skills, but also to his good looks, which was one of the incentives for his popularity to be established. In 2013, in fact, the magazine Elle Girl awarded him the ninth place in the ranking of the 100 sexiest men in the world. This is why the English writer EL James, known for the erotic trilogy of Fifty Shades, declared in the same year that she had chosen the fellow countryman for the role of the charming Christian Gray, but the blond Charlie leaves the production of the film shortly before shooting, due to other commitments.
Although he left behind a role that will cause a stir in commercial film culture, Hunnam soon makes up for it with two other films: Lost civilization (2016) of James Gray, a bio-pic about explorer Percy Fawcett, for which Hunnam was the third choice, after Brad Pitt and Benedict Cumberbatch; King Arthur – The Power of the Sword (2017) of Guy Ritchie, which, despite proposing a sensual and mythical character to the female audience, was so unsuccessful as to cancel even the hypothesis of a future trilogy on King Arthur. Also in 2017 he starred in another biographical film, bow tie, a remake of the 1973 film of the same name, which features Hunnam as the prisoner of the Devil’s Island Henri Charriére, who, who has always declared himself innocent, carries out the most varied escape plans.
