BIOGRAPHY OF COLIN FIRTH
Colin Andrew Firth was born on 10 September 1960 in Grayshott, Hampshire, Great Britain.
His parents are both academics and, as educated people, try to stimulate him intellectually since he was a child. Colin spent his childhood in England, Nigeria and Missouri. At school he is not exactly a model student: he often quarrels with the bullies in the class and, despite at home he reads the Odyssey, he systematically refuses to do his homework.
At fourteen he realizes he wants to be an actor and at eighteen he moved to London, where he first attended the National Youth Theater and then the Drama Center, which serves as a training ground for him to play Shakespeare.
Just the English playwright allows him to meet the talent scout destined to indirectly initiate him to the cinema.
In 1983in fact, his performance in a staging of Hamlet convinces an agent to choose him for the role of Guy Bennett in the show Another Country.
Rupert Everett, originally tied to the part, he gets impressed, and when in 1984 Marek Kanievska gets to work on the film version of the play, suggests he include in the cast Colin Firth. Everett takes on the character of Guy Bennet, while Firth is Tommy Judd, a Marxist student.
Soon Colin starts working on television, alternating films with TV series. In the field of cinema, the two most significant experiences of the second half of the 1980s are A month in the countryside (1987) and Valmont (1989). The turning point in Colin’s career came in 1995, when, in the BBC miniseries Pride and Prejudice, is lucky enough to grab the part of Mr. Darcy. The female audience immediately falls in love with him and the scene in which his character emerges from the waters of a lake with the shirt glued to his chest becomes a cult. Yet, at least in the immediate aftermath of the show, Firth is not offered the so-called life role. Neither The English patient (1996) and Shakespeare in Love (1998) plays secondary characters, what if My life to date it is a work that is immediately forgotten, the most famous Fever at 90 degrees (1997) remains a niche phenomenon after all.
In 2001, the actor joined Renée Zellweger and Hugh Grant in Bridget Jones’s Diary., adaptation of the famous novel by Helen Fielding. Self Colin Firth is hired, the credit is all his Darcy of Pride and Prejudice: not surprisingly, the character he plays in the film is called Marc Darcy. This performance certainly brings good luck to Firth, who however, in the years immediately following, risks being trapped in romantic lead roles. They prove it The importance of being Ernest (2002), Love Actually (2003) and What a mess, Bridget Jones! (2004). It is an exception The girl with the Pearl Earring (2003), in which Colin is the gruff and introverted painter Jan Vermeer.
In 2005 Colin Firth has the opportunity to change genre thanks to False truth of Atom Egoyan, where he can finally give life to an ambiguous and essentially evil character. An alternation of family films and more courageous productions follows. For example, they belong to the first group Nanny McFee – Nanny Matilda (2005) and Mamma Mia! (2008), while they are part of the second The last legion (2007) and Genoa – A place to start over (2008), the latter directed by Michael Winterbottom.
After impersonating the nobleman Jim Whittaker and dancing a sensual tango in An English wedding (2008), Colin Firth meets a man destined to change his career and look. Let’s talk about the stylist Tom Ford, who wants him to be the protagonist of his first film as a director, A Single Man (2009). Playing a melancholy gay professor photographed on the day he decided to take his own life, Firth proves to be very good and the Venice Film Festival awards him the Volpi Cup.
A year and a half later, the most coveted film award of all is added to this prestigious award: the Oscar. Colin wins it for his performance in The King’s Speech (2010), film by Tom Hooper focused on the fight against stuttering of King George VI of England. In addition to the golden statuette, Colin Firth takes home the Golden Globe, BAFTA and Screen Actors Guild.
