BIOGRAPHY OF DARIO FO
Writer, director and actor. After completing his studies at the Brera Academy in Milan, he devoted himself to a career as an actor, director and author of political and social satire. He landed in Rai in 1952 with the radio show ‘Poer Nano’. The first successes arrive thanks to the theater and the satirical magazines ‘The finger in the eye’ and ‘Sani da legare’, with Franco Parenti. In 1959 he founded, with his wife Franca Rame, the theater group ‘Compagnia Dario Fo e Franca Rame’. The couple’s definitive consecration came in 1969 with the show ‘Mistero buffo’. Fo is, among other things, the inventor of the use on stage of the ‘grammelot’: a theatrical language in which the actor emits sounds that imitate, both in rhythm and intonation, a mixture of languages ranging from French to English, from the Po Valley to a non-existent dialect. After having made – between the seventies, eighties and nineties – numerous highly successful works, in 1998 he staged ‘Marino libero, Marino innocente’ (on the murder of Commissioner Calabresi) and the following year ‘Lu santo jullare Francesco ‘, made on the occasion of the Festival dei Due Mondi in Spoleto. In 1997 he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature with the following motivation: ‘… with a fusion of fun and commitment, he opens our eyes to abuses and social injustices, placing them in the broader historical perspective …’.
