DAVID FINCHER BIOGRAPHY

David Andrew Leo Fincher was born in Denver, on August 28, 1962, and showed a strong interest in cinema from a very young age, making 8mm films at the tender age of 8 after being struck by the vision of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. And, perhaps, from being a neighbor of George Lucas when the family moved to California. After a new move, David attends high school in Oregon, technically collaborating on some school set-ups, and at the end of the school, just 18 years old, he starts working as a production assistant at the Korty Film, a company specializing in animation, making itself known for its skills and succeeding in 1983 to get hired at Industrial Light and Magic, where he collaborated in the production of Return of the Jedi and of Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom.

Fincher however, he leaves Lucas’ company as early as 1984 to begin his career as a director of commercials and music videos then, three years later to found one of the most influential production companies in the sector, the Propaganda Films.

The success of his commercials and the videos made for artists such as Rolling Stones, Aerosmith, Madonna and Trent Reznor’s Nine Inch Nails (who years later will become his composer of reference) the doors of Hollywood are thrown open to him: his debut arrives in 1992 and is the third chapter of a beloved science fiction saga, Alien³, unfairly underestimated, not well received and bitterly remembered by the director himself, who complains about the ingenuity with which he conversed with the Studio.

TO Fincher however, it does not take much to get back on track and, proving to know how to choose the scripts well, breaks the box office and wins the critics in the 1995 thanks to the dark neo-noir Seven.

Two years later it’s the turn of another much underrated film, The Game, which at the time did not conquer the public as happened with the previous film, while in 1999 the star of Fincher explodes thanks to Fight Club, adaptation of the novel of the same name by Chuck Palahniuk interpreted by the same Brad Pitt by Seven and by Edward Norton.

Loved and hated like Fight Club, but less iconic for the director’s career, is also the next Panic Room, of the 2002, after which David Fincher takes five years off to return to the great, and with a renewed style yet consistent with the past, with the thriller Zodiac, inspired by the true story of Killer of the Zodiac and performed by Mark Ruffalo, Jake Gyllenhaal and Robert Downey Jr..

The film is presented in competition at Cannes and gets numerous prestigious nominations, as well as the next one The curious case of Benjamin Button, a fantastic love story starring Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett taken from the homonymous story by Francis Scott Fitzgerald, thanks to which Fincher is Golden Globe and Oscar nominee and wins the award for best director of the London Film Critics Circle and of National Board of Review.

In 2010 with The Social Network, the director brings the script of Aaron Sorkin which tells the story of the founder of Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg, collaborating for the first time with Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross for the soundtrack: the film is a great success, which wins 4 Golden Globe (including those of best drama and best director) and gets three Oscars (Best Non-Original Screenplay, Best Score and Best Editing) out of eight overall nominations, including Best Picture and Best Director.

The following year it was the turn of Millennium – Men who hate women, adaptation of the first novel in the Swedish trilogy Stieg Larsson nominated for five Academy Awards. The protagonists are Daniel Craig and a very good one Rooney Mara, but there is also in the film Robin Wright, that Fincher will want as the female lead, alongside Kevin Spacey, for his first television series, the popular House of Cards, for which he is executive producer and director of the first two episodes.

We thus arrive at 2014 de Liar love – Gone Girl, adaptation of the novel of the same name by Gillian Flynn which obtained a great success both with the public and critics, and the project was put in the pipeline Utopia, US version of a British TV series that will be produced by the same HBO of House of Cards is that Fincher, known for his perfectionism, will write and direct in full.
