BIOGRAPHY OF DIRK BOGARDE
Actor. He was born into a family of German origin, his father is a journalist for the “Times” and his mother is an actress. Very refined and elegant, always celibate, it represents the figure of the golden bachelor of the 1950s. After completing his university studies in Scotland and London, he embarks on a theatrical career. In 1947 “Power Without Glory” consecrated him as an actor in front of the London public. From this moment on he starts working for the cinema. He made his screen debut with a small part in John Paddy Carstairs’ “Ballo con delitto”, in which he obtained great critical and public acclaim. But the real turning point came in 1961 in Basil Dearden’s “Victim”, in the role of a homosexual lawyer. The most uncomfortable parts suited to his temperament are reserved for him by director Joseph Losey: in 1963 he wore the role of a slimy waiter in “Servo”, for which he won the British Academy Award and in 1967 in “L’incidente” he was engaged in a psychological drama centered on the clash between two men over a foreign girl. In 1969 he began an intense collaboration with Italian directors. Visconti offers him a part in “The Fall of the Gods” (1969) where Bogarde manages to express the anguish of death. Again with Visconti he shoots “Death in Venice” in 1971 in which he masterfully interprets the character of Gustav von Aschenbach, the portrait of European decadence. In 1974 Liliana Cavani wanted him to play “The Night Porter”, a strange story of a sadomasochistic relationship between a girl returning from a concentration camp and her found torturer. In 1977 he was the protagonist of “Despair” in which director Fassbinder evokes pre-war Berlin. After this period, Bogarde moves away from the film scene for a long period, 12 years, during which he devotes himself to his great passion, writing. He has published a monumental autobiography and seven novels. He returned to the screen in 1990 with “Daddy Nostalgie”, Bertrand Tavernier’s masterpiece, where Bogarde is a businessman who returns home to die after traveling the world. On February 13, 1992, Queen Elizabeth appointed him a Knight. He was also President of the jury of the Cannes Film Festival. He died of a heart attack on May 8, 1999 in his London home.
