Ellen Degeneres announced earlier this month that she was done with her daytime talk show and would quit after next season. Today, several media are reporting that she and her wife, Portia de Rossi, are plotting to leave the country soon after.
“It’s either Australia or the bust for Portia and Ellen,” a source told New Idea magazine. “There really is no choice in this matter.”
De Rossi was born in Australia and his dual citizenship both there and in the United States. The powerful couple, who married in 2008, are said to be looking for a “quieter life” on Victoria’s chic Mornington Peninsula, just an hour from Melbourne.
In other Ellen news, it is rumored that singer Kelly Clarkson is seen to be taking over her coveted afternoon time slot. TMZ reports that Clarkson has always been NBC’s “apparent heir” to DeGeneres, although Tiffany Haddish is also being considered.
DeGeneres has revealed she will end her once successful daytime talk show following allegations last summer of a toxic workplace, bullying and harassment, although she insisted that that wasn’t the reason she was walking away.
In an interview with Savanah Guthrie, she said she was still “surprised” and deeply hurt by the criticisms she had received, which she deemed “too coordinated” and deeply rooted in misogyny.
“I have to say – if no one else was saying it – it was really interesting because I’m a woman, and it sounded very misogynistic to me,” she said.
