BIOGRAPHY OF FRANCO BATTIATO
Director, songwriter, composer. Born in 1945, he reached Milan in the early seventies and showed up early in the morning at the Gaber home. Made friends with the singer-songwriter, then already famous, for a few years he was the guitarist of the group that accompanied Ombretta Colli. Passionate about musical research and experimentation, he signed his first recordings between 1971 and 1975, at the rate of one a year, with the ‘Bla Bla’ brand. In 1975 it passes under the banner of ‘Ricordi’ which in the same year publishes ‘Feedback’, a double album that collects a large part of the previous production. In the following years ‘Battiato’ (1976) and ‘Juke Box’ (1977) were released. In 1978, with the piano piece ‘Egypt before the sands’, he won the ‘Karl Heinz Stockhausen’ prize. The following year he passed with ‘Emi Italia’ and signed the album that earned him his first great notoriety, ‘The era of the white boar’. Two years later it was the turn of ‘La voce del Padrone’, which remained at the top of the Italian charts for about a year, selling over a million copies. In 1985, parallel to his musical activity, he founded the publishing house ‘L’Ottava’ in collaboration with Longanesi. In 1989 he founded, with the same name, a record label reserved for works defined as ‘frontier’ between song, ethnic music and cultured composition. On April 26, 1987, his lyric opera ‘Genesi’ was staged for the first time at the Teatro Regio in Parma, which had a gestation of three years. After pop music and opera, in 1990 he also arrives at the cinema with the soundtrack of the film ‘Benvenuto Cellini – Una vita niche’. The following year, the song ‘Povera Patria’ (contained in the album ‘Like a camel in a gutter’) becomes a symbol of civil commitment. In 1992 he successfully presented his second opera ‘Gilgamesh’ at the Teatro dell’Opera di Roma. The first half of the nineties is characterized by his collaboration with the philosopher Manlio Sgalambro. In 1994, to celebrate the eighth centenary of the birth of Frederick II of Swabia, the opera ‘The Knight of the intellect’ was performed in Palermo, based on a libretto by the philosopher. In 1995 the pop album ‘The umbrella and the sewing machine’ was released, based on texts by Sgalambro himself. The second half of the nineties, however, marks the arrival in the stables of labels such as Polygram and Sony. In 1996 the album ‘L’amboscata’ was released, in which the song ‘La cura’ was voted the best song of the year. After numerous other successes, at the end of 2002 he returned to dealing with cinema, this time however as a director to make ‘PERDUToAMOR’ (2003), his first feature film which was followed in 2005 by ‘Musikanten’.
