BIOGRAPHY OF GASPARD ULLIEL
Gaspard Ulliel is born the November 25, 1984 in Boulogne-Billancourt, a suburb of Paris. During his college years he received his first role as an actor in the TV series Une femme en blanc (1997), an incentive that led him to enroll at the University of Saint-Denis to study cinema, initially moving towards directing. With an active, albeit not yet brilliant, television career, two years after his debut in 1999, he joined the cast of Alias, short film by Marina de Van relating to the homonymous series. The film debut, however, comes with a small role in it The pact of wolves (2001) of Christophe Gans and Ulliel begins to get noticed by French filmmakers; that is how Michel Blanc he wants it in his Kiss whoever you like (2002), a romantic comedy that offers him the opportunity to perform alongside established performers, such as Charlotte Rampling. An interpretation, his, which promptly puts him in the spotlight and which earned him the nomination for the César Awards as Best Male Presence. His name also falls under the watchful eye of the director André Téchiné, which allows it to shine next to Emmanuelle Béart in Wandering souls (2003), in his first co-star role, with which he won his second César nomination.
In 2004 Ulliel is only twenty years old and is already one of the young promises of French cinema with a career that is beginning to flourish greatly; finally, in fact, he receives that recognition that until now had been denied: the César Award for Best Male Promise in A long Sunday of passions (2004), war and sentimental film with Audrey Tautou. After this film, nominated for an Oscar for photography and scenography, the French actor throws himself headlong into the big productions and appears in the segment directed by Gus Van Sant in Paris, je t’aime (2006). Ulliel gets international fame with the role of the young Hannibal Lecter in Hannibal Lecter: The origins of evil (2007), although the attempt to Peter Webber to relaunch the cult saga, recounting the past life of the anthropophagous serial killer, did not prove to be a success. Other work commitments follow that unfortunately go unnoticed in the eyes of critics and the public, including A dam on the Pacific (2008) of Rithy Panh, where is the son of Isabelle Huppert, is The law of crime (2009) with Jean Reno. Although he has always played relevant roles, Ulliel will have to wait for the French costume film The Princess de Montpensier (2010) by Bertrand Tavernier to star in a critically acclaimed work. The film also marks his total return to the French camera, confirmed the following year by his presence in the cast de The art of aimer (2011).
In 2012 he voices Jack Frost in the French version of the American animated film Rise of the Guardians and in the meantime he works on a role that raises his career, that of the designer Yves Saint Laurent in the bio-pic Saint Laurent (2014). Although it allowed him to win yet another César nomination and the victory of the Lumière Prize for Best Actor, the film remains average. Ulliel, however, takes back the firm reins of his work and is directed by Xavier Dolan, who wants him as the protagonist in It’s just the end of the world (2016), where the actor plays terminal writer Louis. Here Ulliel shares the set with the crème de la crème of contemporary French cinema with stars of the caliber of Vincent Cassel is Marion Cotillard, but it is he who impresses the César jury and wins the award. In the same year he also took part in a more experimental project, the bio-pic I will dance (2016) about the dancer Loïe Fuller. Find Huppert again, this time as a lover, in Eva (2017) of Benoît Jacquot, where Ulliel is a young writer fascinated by a mysterious high-class prostitute.
