The Mummy
Horror impresario Clive Barker just revealed plans for a remake of The Mummy that would involve a transgender track.
During a conversation with fellow horror director Mick Garris for Garris’ Post Mortem podcast with Mick Garris, Barker and his friend recalled their plan to remake the classic Universal. The couple had collaborated on a script and even presented the concept to Universal, with Barker – then a director in heat thanks to the success of Hellraiser – set to helm the film.
“There was the first sex change… transsexual… so we were ahead of the curve,” Barker recalls. “So there is a boy born… a boy-child born at the beginning of the story, which is obviously significant in the story… but we cut twenty years and there is no sign of that type. Apparently. There is a wonderfully weird and mysterious woman who is part of the tale, a very important part of the tale – I don’t want to say too much because we are going to do this someday … hopefully … we should talk to Netflix… ”

“The little boy… who was born at the beginning of the story… has become this exquisite woman,” he continues. “And an important part of a modern tale of The Mummy. But that’s our naivety, Mick. How could we have thought, in 1989, when we made this, that they would say, “Ah, great! I think I had a little naive attitude [towards] the costumes.
Barker and Garris also reveal that the story is said to have been very sexual in nature and takes place in a Beverly Hills museum.
Hope the executives at Universal Pictures hear the podcast. The studio then successfully rebooted The Mummy in 1999 and produced several sequels. A more recent remake in 2017 with Tom Cruise aimed to launch the “Dark Universe” studio; an expanded universe that would involve all the classic horror monsters. The film turned out to be a huge bombshell, and the studio canceled subsequent Bride of Frankenstein and The Invisible Man entries as a result.
