BIOGRAPHY OF GUILLERMO DEL TORO

Guillermo del Toro Gómez was born on October 9, 1964 in Guadalajara, Mexico, where he studied at the Centro de Investigación y Estudios Cinematográficos. He develops a passion for the big screen since childhood, making short films, but he entered the world of cinema first as an expert in makeup and special effects (he also founded his own company, Necropia), only in 1993, after having directed the courts Doña Lupe (1985) and Geometria (1987) and some Mexican television programs, shoots his first feature film, Cronos (1993). It is a horror that sees the American among the protagonists Ron Perlman, an actor with whom Del Toro will often collaborate from now on.

In 1997 Miramax produced his second work for him, Mimic, in which he also appears in the cast Giancarlo Giannini, chosen by the director instead of Federico Luppi – for which he has great admiration – because of the English pronunciation. The following year his father is kidnapped and released only upon payment of a ransom, it is an event that turns his life upside down, prompting the entire Del Toro family to move to the States. After the third horror film produced in Spain, The devil’s thorn (2001), considered one of his best works, is dedicated to the film adaptation of two comics with superheroes out of the ordinary, Blade II (2002) ed Hellboy (2004), both crossed by those dark shades that their filmmaker likes so much. It was in 2006, however, that world success came with The labyrinth of the faun, which can be considered the second film in the fantasy-horror trilogy set during and after the Spanish Civil War, inaugurated with The Thorn of the Side. The film won three Oscars, as well as an excellent judgment from both critics and the public, consecrating the director as a master of the genre and outlining his style that mixes the magical fairytale atmosphere with the darker shades of horror movie. Del Toro, for his part, has declared in several interviews that he is almost fetishistically attracted to monsters and dark places, a passion also born from the reading of several horror novels, which have been a real source of inspiration for him.

In 2008 he was involved as the director of two films dedicated to The Hobbit, but due to delays in the start of filming declines the offer, remaining, however, as co-screenwriter. It is following the renunciation that he can dedicate himself to the film adaptation of the novels of one of his favorite writers, The mountains of madness of Howard Philips Lovecraft, however, after having ascertained the cost of the work, the project is canceled; but Del Toro doesn’t give up and in 2013 he brings sci-fi to theaters Pacific Rim, also taken from a comic, scoring another point. Two years later with Crimson Peak (2015) returns to terrorize the general public with ghosts, massacres and incest, bringing on stage in the role of villains Tom Hiddleston and the red one Jessica Chastain. In 2017 he presented the romantic fantasy and dark fairy tale at the 74th Venice International Film Festival The shape of water with which he won the Golden Lion, as well as his first Golden Globe for Best Director. To crown the success of the film also came 13 Oscar nominations 2018, including those for best film and best direction

Since 2009 Guillermo del Toro has also carried on an activity as a writer of horror novels, in fact he has a trilogy, Nocturna, written together with Chuck Hogan and dedicated to vampires and two other writings, developed together with Daniel Kraus, including The Shape of Water, from which he based his film.
