Lil Nas X in ‘MONTERO (Call Me By Your Name)’ video
Lil Nas X’s latest track, “MONTERO (Call Me By Your Name)” has been confirmed as the new number one on the Billboard Hot 100. The single debuted on the charts yesterday. This is Lil Nas X’s second Billboard Hot 100 number one after the success of his previous single, “Old Town Road”.
Billboard confirmed the news in a tweet yesterday.
@ LilNasX’s “Montero (Call Me By Your Name)” officially debuts at # 1 on # Hot100 this week.
This is his second No. 1 single in his career, after “Old Town Road” in 2019.

The organization said the song had “46.9 million US streams and sold 21,000 downloads in the week ending April 1.” It also drew 1.1 million radio audience impressions in the week ending April 4. ” He also made his debut at the top of the UK singles charts on Friday.
Lil Nas X posted a lengthy statement on his Instagram.
“Last year I was sitting in my apartment thinking that it was all over for me. I was trying so hard to be perfect, to please everyone and not to make enemies. It choked me creatively. I felt so sorry for myself. But around this time in 2020 I put it together, me daytrip, omer and roy worked for months.
“One day in June I was working on a song and found myself leaving the studio every 10 minutes to cry. But I didn’t stop working, a melody came to my mind. “Call me when u want na-na-na-na na, and I knew it was something special about it, fast forward a year later it’s the greatest song in the world. Thanks a lot guys. We can decide OUR own destiny, never let the world decide it for YOU! I love you!”

The track’s success is remarkable for several reasons. First, the rapper first posted a 20-second clip of the song on his Twitter last July. Although he immediately proved himself a fan favorite, he decided to wait eight months before releasing the full song. In today’s music industry, while most fans expect to be able to stream a track the first time they hear it, it has helped create anticipation.
Second, it was accompanied by a controversial video in which Lil Nax X slipped on a pole in Hell and danced Satan.

Lil Nas X has spent most of the past ten days encouraging fans to air the track and watch the video. His controversy over the “ Satan Shoes ” (limited edition modified Nikes that prompted a quick trial) also made headlines and the video sparked several TikTok trends.

On Twitter, Lil Nas X responded to the news of his number one debut in a distinctively bullish fashion, posting a video clip of SpongeBob SquarePants with the caption: “Me after I got a song about gay sex on top of the charts. “
