BIOGRAPHY OF JAMES FRANCO
He was born in Palo Alto, California, the son of Betsy Lou, a poet, author and editor, and Douglas Eugene Franco, director of a non-profit agency and a container ship company. The father is of Portuguese and Swedish descent while the mother is Jewish and descended from Russian immigrants. Franco grows up in California with his two younger brothers, Tom and Dave, who is also an actor. He graduated from Palo Alto High School in 1996, where he began acting in school plays and enrolled at the University of California, Los Angeles, to graduate in English; in order to focus on his acting career, he dropped out of school, taking lessons with Robert Carnegie at Playhouse West. In 2006, he re-enrolled at the University of California, Los Angeles, to complete his studies and, studying and acting at the same time, graduated in 2008. Later he moved to New York to attend Columbia writing classes University, directing at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts and creative writing at Brooklyn College. In 2010, he received his “Master of Fine Arts” from Columbia University and attended his PhD in English at Yale University. After more than a year of preparation, he starts showing up for some auditions in Los Angeles and gets his first major role in 1999 by joining the cast of Freaks and Geeks as the protagonist, an experience that the actor describes as “one of the funniest”. He made his big screen debut in the romantic comedy Whatever it takes alongside Marla Sokoloff. In 2001 he plays James Dean in the biopic for television directed by Mark Rydell. In 2002 he joined the cast of Spider-Man and stars as Harry Osborn, son of the very bad Green Goblin played by Willem Dafoe and best friend of the protagonist played by Tobey Maguire. In the same year he plays a homeless drug addict in the drama Guilty of murder alongside Robert De Niro, with whom he had previously worked on James Dean – The true story. The following year he co-starred with Neve Campbell in Robert Altman’s film, The Company. The success of the first film by Spider-Man allows him to star in the sequel Spider-Man 2 in 2004. In 2005, he appears in the war film The Great Raid – A handful of heroes playing Robert Prince. In 2006, he co-starred with Tyrese Gibson in Annapolis and in the same year he plays the legendary hero Tristan in Tristan and Isolde alongside Sophia Myles. Also in 2006 appears in the remake of the horror Il preselto con Nicolas Cage and in a small cameo in Love does not go on vacation. In 2007, he returns as Harry Osborn in Spider-Man 3, a film that while not as critically acclaimed as its predecessors, grossed $ 891 million worldwide. He starred in the same year as the film Rupert Wyatt, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, prequel to the saga of Planet of the Apes. 2013 marks a great period of activity for Franco. The first film to be released in theaters starring Franco is The great and mighty Oz, a Disney prequel to the film The Wizard of Oz. Filming began in July 2011, and the film was released on March 8, 2013. The film is directed by Sam Raimi, director of the Spider-man series which thus marks the fourth collaboration between the two. Later he starred in the insane film Let’s get it over with directed by Evan Goldberg and Seth Rogen. At the 70th Venice International Film Festival, he presents his first feature film as a director in competition Child of God, based on a book by Cormac McCarthy and starring Scott Haze. The same year Franco launched into writing and directing As I Lay Dying, remake of the literary masterpiece of the American writer William Faulkner. In 2014 he joined Kristen Bell in Veronica Mars – The Movie, the film adaptation of the homonymous television series. Despite the poor critical acclaim received for As I Lay Dying, Franco decides to devote himself to directing The Sound and the Fury, inspired by the novel of the same name by Faulkner.
