JOHN GIELGUD BIOGRAPHY

Actor. Son of a stockbroker and descendant of a well-known theatrical actress of the Victorian era, he showed his passion for the show from an early age. His parents wanted to make him an architect, but the young John – after high school at the prestigious Westminster School in London – attended the ‘Lady Benson’s Acting School and then won, in 1921, a scholarship to the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts. At 18 he made his London debut, with a small part, in Henry V at the Old Vic. His talent is immediately noticed and success is not long in coming. In 1924 he was chosen to play Romeo and, in a short time, he played all the most important roles in the Shakespearean scene: from Richard II, to King Lear to Hamlet. It is precisely the Danish prince who guaranteed him success also in the United States (where he made his debut in 1928 with ‘The Patriot’): his ‘Hamlet’, in fact, set the box office record in the Thirties on Broadway. The character he loves the most is, however, Prospero, the Duke of Milan from ‘The Tempest’. So much so that in 1990 – already over eighty – he enthusiastically accepts to participate in a film version of the work and is filmed naked by Peter Greenaway’s cameras. On the big screen he made his debut in 1924 and collected numerous interpretations in thick films: from ‘Julius Caesar’ (1953, by Joseph Mankiewicz) to ‘Richard III’ (1955, by Lawrence Olivier) from ‘Falstaff’ (1966, by Orson Welles) to ‘Murder on the Orient Express’ (1974, by Sidney Lumet) from ‘Gandhi’ (1982, by Richard Attemborough) to ‘Arturo’, a brilliant comedy directed by Steve Gordon with Dudley Moore and Liza Minnelli which in 1982 allows him to win an Oscar. Awarded the title of baronet in 1953, Gielgud is remembered in the world for his refined and ferocious sense of humor. The last representative of a legendary generation that had Laurence Olivier and Michael Redgrave among its leading exponents, he died of natural causes in his home in Aylesbury, in the Buckinghamshire countryside.
