BIOGRAPHY OF JUDY GARLAND
Actress and singer. He was born in a town on the banks of the Mississippi, where his father runs the only existing cinema-theater. Here Frances, together with her two older sisters, Mary Jane and Virginia, made her debut in variety at a very young age. In 1927 the family moved to California. In 1934, during a theatrical tour in Chigaco with her sisters, she decides to change her name to Judy Garland. Shortly after, she made her debut in the cinema with the musicals’ Every Sunday ‘and’ Pigskin Parade ‘(both from 1936), but the film that definitively transformed her into a star was’ The Wizard of Oz’ (1939, in which she sang ‘Over the Rainbow ‘, one of the greatest hits of all time). For the role of little Dorothy, the Academy Awards gives her a special award for the best interpretation intended for a young audience. In the following years he appeared in a long line of MGM musicals, such as ‘The Boys from Broadway’, and ‘Let’s Meet in St. Louis’, often alongside his friend Mickey Rooney. Very soon, in order to sustain the pressing rhythms of work that the Studios impose on her, she begins to use stimulant pills and barbiturates. Her love life is quite eventful: after several relationships, in 1941 she married for the first time with the musician David Rose, but the bond was short-lived. In 1945 he remarried with the director Vincente Minnelli, with whom he had his daughter Liza, who in turn became a famous actress and singer. The artistic and sentimental partnership between the two also produces some films, including ‘L’orologio’, (1945) and ‘Il pirata’, (1948). But her drug addiction problems worsen and in 1950 MGM decided not to renew her contract. The bond with Minnelli also fails and in 1952, after the divorce, Judy married a third time with the producer Sidney Luft, father of her other children Lorna and Joey. Her husband helps her to relaunch her career through a very successful concert series and above all by producing the film ‘A Star Is Born’ (1954), in which Judy reveals great dramatic qualities, confirmed in 1961 with ‘Winners and losers’ . However, this marriage also fails, and in 1964 Garland married actor Mark Herron for the fourth time. During the 1960s, alongside his film activity, he took part in various television shows and numerous musical tours. In 1967 she also divorces Herron, who discovers he is gay, and after two years she marries the record producer Mickey Deans, who remains with her until his death, a few months later when on the night of June 22, 1969 he dies of an overdose of barbiturates. During his funeral in Manhattan, twenty-two thousand people parade in front of his coffin for a final farewell. In his hometown the ‘Judy Garland Museum’ was built in his memory, in the places where he had lived.
