Justin Timberlake has expressed his support for ex-girlfriend Britney Spears in her battle to end her guardianship.
On Wednesday (June 23), after Britney’s guardianship hearing, Justin took to Twitter to express his support.
“After what we’ve seen today, we should all be supporting Britney right now,” he began. “It doesn’t matter what our past is, good or bad, and no matter how long it’s been… what is happening to him is just not right.”
“No woman should ever be prevented from making decisions about her own body,” he added. He apparently referred to Britney’s statement in court revealing that she had an IUD implanted and had no right to have it removed, even though she wants to be able to have another child in the future.
“No one should NEVER be held against their will… or have to ask permission to access anything they’ve worked so hard for,” he continued. Britney’s dad, Jamie Spears, is the co-curator of her finances. During her testimony, Britney said there was nothing she could do with the money she earned. Britney has previously said she was afraid of her father and wanted him removed from her tutelage.
Justin concluded his thread by sending the love and support of his wife Jessica Biel to Britney and hopes the court and her family “fix things up and let her live the way she wants.”
Although he shared his support, he faced backlash from social media. Some users called his support “performative” while others wondered why he hadn’t used his platform to support it earlier.
This isn’t the first time he’s come under scrutiny around Britney. After the documentary Framing Britney Spears debuted earlier this year, people were outraged by Justin’s handling of their infamous 2002 breakup.
Justin was on a radio show where he was asked if he had slept with Britney. He answered yes eagerly. Seven years after the split in 2009, he referred to their sex life during a Saturday Night Live sketch.
After the documentary was released, Justin publicly apologized to Britney as well as Janet Jackson for handling their Super Bowl costume fiasco.
“I specifically want to apologize to Britney Spears and Janet Jackson individually, because I care about these women and I respect them and I know I failed,” he wrote at the time.
