BIOGRAPHY OF LUC BESSON
Director, screenwriter and producer. His parents, scuba diving instructors, are forced to travel frequently due to their work, so young Luc develops a passion for the marine environment that will affect him throughout his life. During one of these trips, at the age of seventeen, he has an accident that ruins his plans: he will no longer be able to dive and become a marine biologist specializing in the study of dolphins. He returns to Paris, where he begins to take an interest in cinema, then at nineteen he moves to Hollywood to learn the techniques of American cinema. This experience shaped him deeply and, not surprisingly, he was considered the most “American” French director of the 90s. At the age of twenty he returned to France and founded the production company “Les Films du Loup”, which later became “Les Films du Dauphin”. In 1981 he made his first film, “L’avant-dernier” with Jean Renon with whom he will often work. The following year he tackles the science fiction genre with “Le dernier combat”, set in a Paris destroyed by a nuclear catastrophe, which is made original by the total absence of dialogue and the use of black and white clips. Besson from the very beginning proves to know how to happily combine Hollywood spectacularity with the subtleties of European cinema. Other proofs of his ability to invent original worlds are the films “Subway” (1985) with Christopher Lambert and Isabelle Adjani, a love story set in the underground tunnels that the director transforms into a science fiction space, and “The Big Blue” ( 1988), where Besson can finally express in images his great love for the deep sea. The film, however, was crushed by critics in Cannes, although it achieved great success with the public but has a difficult path because in Italy the release is blocked due to the lawsuit brought by Enzo Maiorca, who believes himself harmed by the negative representation of the his character. The great success, however, came in 1990 with “Nikita”, played by Anne Parillaud, wife of Besson with whom he had a daughter three years earlier, and Jean Reno. tops the box office charts and consecrates Besson as an international director. Immediately after the end of filming “Nikita” Besson divorces. At the same time he prepares another great success, based on the same themes as the previous one, “Leon” (1991), also with Reno, and with a great friend of Besson’s, Gary Oldman, who will also act, together with Bruce Willis and Milla Jovovich , in “The Fifth Element” (1997), the most expensive film in the history of French cinema (500 million francs), which won the French César Award for Direction. Particularly relevant in the film is the presence of little Nathalie Portman, who grew up and kept her promises. In December of the same year, the director married Jovovich, from whom he divorced two years later, after she starred in “Joan of Arc”, Besson’s first historical film, which, however, was not a great success. Later he devoted himself mainly to writing, ranging, among other things, from the screenplay of ‘Taxxi’ (1998) whose success deserves two sequels, one in 2000, and another in 2003, to oriental themes such as’ Kiss of The Dragon ‘,’ Wasabi ‘or’ Yamakasi – The new samurai ‘all from 2001, passing through the historical remake such as’ The Golden Tulip’ (2003) or the adventure as’ Blue adrenaline – The legend of Michel Vaillant ‘in 2003 He returns to directing in 2005 with ‘Angel-A’ and, above all, in 2006 he decides to devote himself to animation with ‘Arthur and the Minimei people’.
