Pop icon Madonna sparked a tidal wave over remarks that she, not Lil Nas X, gave the first gay kiss at a big awards show.
Lil Nas X, 22, made history last weekend when he kissed another guy during his recent performance at the BET Awards. It was the first male-male smooch in the history of performance at the particular show. (Adam Lambert, some have noted, did a similar thing during the 2009 AMAs, although the response he received was much less positive.)
Never one to pass up a chance to advertise, Madonna took to Instagram to share a picture of herself kissing Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera at the 2003 MTV VMAs with the hashtag #diditfirst.
In 2003, the kiss sparked controversy and backlash, not so much for innovation as for a transparent publicity stunt.
Following the post, Twitter exploded in anger …

Madonna is so small and deaf. I see straight white girls kissing in bars all the time. Seeing a gay black man kissing another man in front of a predominantly black audience strikes differently. #BETAwards #diditfirst

“Said fucking Madonna, lol. Yeah, maybe she did it first BUT the big difference is their gay, the colored people and the kiss was REAL !!!” observed @ Joseph7Mora8.
“If there was ever someone who didn’t need to point out that she # said first ……… ..” @DJLouieXIV moaned.
Ironically, in the midst of all the stomach aches, Madonna found an unlikely defender: Lil Nas X himself. The two have been friends since his ill-fated Madame X tour, where they bonded over a beer. At the time, she even posted some on her Instagram.
“Madonna and I are friends. It’s just a joke,” Lil Nas X tweeted. When that didn’t seem to suppress the enemies – who then turned on Mr. X – he sent out a second tweet. that we knew you were all friends, ”he added.
For the record, by any standard, Lil Nas X’s big kiss broke new ground. And when it comes to Madonna, we feel the need to emphasize that she has always been a gay icon and ally of the LGBTQ community, speaking out against homophobia in her concert documentary Truth or Dare, employing LGBTQ dancers and lobbying. for marriage equality among many people. other public forums. She also hinted that she was bisexual herself and allegedly had a lesbian relationship with actress Sandra Bernhard, although Bernhard later said those reports were not accurate.
