BIOGRAPHY OF PAUL GIAMATTI
Actor. Son of Bartlett, professor of literature at Yale and of Toni Smith, actress before marriage. He has an older brother, Marcus, also an actor, and a sister, Elena, a jewelry designer. Paul graduated from Choate Rosemary Hall School, graduated in English literature from Yale University where he also studied acting following a master’s degree from the School of Drama. Thus he begins acting with the university company with which, from the Yale stage, he arrives at the Broadway one. He made his debut on the big screen in 1992 with a very small part in the film ‘Singles – Love is a game’ and from that moment his activity has not stopped. He plays primarily as a character actor in prominent films: Woody Allen’s’ The Goddess of Love ‘in 1995, Peter Weir’s’ The Truman Show’ (1998), ‘Saving Private Ryan’ (1998) and 2001 ‘Planet of the Apes – Planet of the Apes’ (2001) by Tim Burton. The starring role came in 2003 with the film ‘American Splendor’, in which he played a wacky employee of the Cleveland Veterans’ Hospital. The film won the award for best film at the Sundance Film Festival and from that moment on, attracting attention to him. So, the following year, he is the protagonist of the film ‘Sideways – Traveling with Jack’ (2004, Oscar for the best screenplay) to which he gives his most brilliant interpretation that earns him a very high approval by the public. Only a year later he gets the Oscar nomination for best supporting actor for the film ‘Cinderella Man – A reason to fight’, a film inspired by the life of boxer Jim Braddock in which Giamatti plays his impresario. In 2006 he was chosen for M. Night Shyamalan’s new fantasy ‘Lady in the Water’, in which he plays a caretaker who finds a fairytale nymph in the pool of his condominium. Paul shows once again his versatility by coming, in 2007, to interpret two almost contrasting roles, passing from the hilarious Christmas comedy ‘Fred Claus – A brother under the tree’ in which he even plays Santa Claus, to the thriller ‘Shoot’ Em Up – Shoot or Die ‘, in which he leads a gang of violent criminals. He has been married since 1997 to Elizabeth Cohen with whom he had a child, Samuel, born in 2001.
