PETER FINCH’S BIOGRAPHY
Actor. The son of an Englishwoman and an Australian researcher, he spent his childhood in France and India. At the age of 10 he moved to Australia with his father. Before arriving at the theater, he practices the most varied jobs, including that of kangaroo trainer. Great actor, he has a reputation as a seducer even if paradoxically the most incisive roles of his career are as a homosexual. He had three wives and many mistresses. The first wife is a Russian dancer, Tamara Tcninarava; the second is a South American actress, Yolanda Turner; the third is a Jamaican actress, Eletha Barrett. In 1936 he began working for the cinema and reached a certain popularity with the radio, thanks to his warm and sensual voice. He discovers him on a stage in Sydney, the great Laurence Olivier who convinces him to move to London in 1949. Thus begins his theatrical and film career, which leads him to be one of the most popular actors in England in the 1950s. Thanks to his cold attitude and harsh expression, he becomes the ideal interpreter of negative characters. He masterfully plays very courageous films for the time wearing the role of the homosexual doctor in Schlesinger’s “Domenica, cursedetta Domenica” (1971), which shares the young lover with a divorced woman, and also in “The Green Carnation” (1960) by Ken Hughes as Oscar Wilde. In 1954 he was a thug in Robert Hamer’s comedy “Father Brown. A Strange Detective” (1954). He received numerous awards for his excellent performance in the comic “Eri tu amore” (1961) by Ralph Thomas. Of his 52 films, Robert Aldrich’s “The Flight of the Phoenix” (1965), Schlesinger’s “Away from the Mad Crowd” (1967) as a shy lover, and “The Red Curtain” (1971) deserve mention. Michael K. Kalatozov. For his extraordinary interpretation of a journalist who tries to fight against the multinational that owns the television station he works for, in Sidney Lumet’s “Fifth Power” (1976), Peter Finch gets an Oscar, but posthumously because he dies immediately after the shooting , struck down by a heart attack in Los Angeles on January 14, 1977.
