BIOGRAPHY OF RICHARD E. GRANT

Richard E. Grant, born Richard Grant Esterhuysen, was born on May 5, 1957 in Mbabane, Swaziland. His passion for the world of cinema was born at an early age, when he fell in love with Barbra Streisand. Little Richard’s childhood is marked by two shocking events: the divorce of his parents after the betrayal of his mother (which the child witnessed by chance) and the death of his father a few years later. After high school, Grant studied English and theater at the University of Cape Town, adopting the stage name he still uses today. Later he joined the Space Theater Company of the city and began to tread the stage frequently. His stay in South Africa, however, did not last long, because in 1982 he moved to London, where he alternated work as a waiter with theatrical rehearsals, to which he devoted himself incessantly, eventually winning the nomination as Most Promising Newcomer for his performance in “Tramwat Road at the Lyric Theater in Hammersmith.

These are the years in which he receives his first small television gigs, followed by his film debut with a starring role in 1987 in Shakespeare at breakfast of Bruce Robinson. His debut with a bang, which guarantees him a quick success in Hollywood with The mountains of the moon (1990), Henry & June (1990), Crazy in Beverly Hills (1991). In 1992 Grant took part in one of the most famous meta-cinematographic films of all time: The protagonists (1992) by Robert Altman, where he plays emerging executive Larry Levy.

Other titles of great importance follow such as Bram Stoker’s Dracula (1992), directed by Francis Fors Coppola, or The age of innocence (1993) by Martin Scorsese; while in 1994 he collaborated again with Altman in Ready-to-wear. This line of secondary roles was interrupted in 1995 by the participation in Jack & Sarah, sentimental comedy in which he stars with Samantha Mathis. Yet Grant’s luck seems to be due to supporting roles, especially in moderately successful films. This is how the South African actor continues his career with the drama Portrait of a lady (1996), sharing the set with Nicole Kidman, John Malkovich and a very young man Christian Bale. He’s in the movie about and with Spiece Girls in 1997, but this is not the only collaboration with pop-stars, in fact in 2008 Grant will also take part in Madonna’s directorial debut with the short film Sacred and profane. In 2001 he returned to be directed for the third time by Altman in Gosford Park, dramatic comedy set in the 1930s.

In 2006 he is the father of one Christina Ricci from the nose “a little particular” in Penelope, fantastic film with sentimental tones about a young woman born with a pig’s snout due to a curse. A few years later Grant takes part in The Nutcracker in 3D (2010), loosely based on the ballet of the same name, once again in the role of the father of the protagonist, this time interpreted by Elle Fanning. Tchaikovsky’s work, however, will reappear in his artistic path in 2018, when the actor will take on the role of King Thrill of the Kingdom of the Snowflakes of fantasy The Nutcracker and the Four Realms. In 2011 he starred in the thriller Nothing under the dress – The last show of Carlo Vanzina with the role of stylist Fedrico Marinoni. He later plays British politician Michael Heseltine in the bio-pic about Margaret Thatcher, The Iron Lady (2011), and stars alongside Jude Law in noir Dom Hemingway (2013).

Between 2012 and 2013 he played a version of the Ninth and Tenth Doctor three times in Doctor Who, however, outside the main plot. Also on the small screen he participates in other successful TV series, such as Downton Abbey (2014), Dig (2015) and in 2016 he joined the cast of the sixth season of Game of thrones like the mummer Izembaro. In 2017 he took part in his first superhero film, it is about Logan – The Wolverine, in which Grant is the insane head of the Transigen project, Zander Rice. After such a long and zealous career, the awaited nomination for the Oscar in 2019 as Best Supporting Actor for the performance in Original copy, bio-pic about author and scammer Lee Israel.
