He spent his teenage years in Charlottesville, Virginia, then moved with his family to Louisiana, Baton Range. It was during his high school years that the young director discovered his passion for cinema, starting to shoot some short films with a Super 8. After graduating, he moved to Hollywood to devote himself completely to cinema, but his first assignments saw him working as an editor. freelance. Back in Baton Range he makes his first film, Sex, lies and videotape (1989), a striking debut crowned by the Palme d’Or at Cannes, an Independent Spirit Award and several other nominations, including an Oscar nomination for Best Original Screenplay. The film, considered one of the most influential films of the 90s independent cinema movement, allows its factor to be one of the youngest directors to win the festival.

Too bad that the prodigy and the hype generated by Sex, lies and videotape has not been constant with regard to his later works. Crimes and punishments (1991) receives mixed reviews and, although it was a low-budget film, it didn’t earn a tenth of it. Little, big Aron (1993), despite critical approval, does not achieve the same good results in commercial terms. Cloudy obsessions (1995) is not received positively either by critics or by the public or even Schizopolis (1996), a direct comedy, written and starring Soderbergh himself, managed to shake the waters of his career, but ended up worsening the situation, winning the label “worst movie of the cinema” on Rotten Tomatoes. The fate of the director seems to rise again with Out of Sight (1998), comedy with George Clooney, as a bank robber, e Jennifer Lopez. Taking up the reins of his career, with 2000 comes for Soderbergh a great confirmation of his directorial skills, accompanied by the Oscar nomination of the bio-pic Erin Brockovich – Strong as the truth and thriller Traffic, with which the filmmaker won two nominations in the same year for the category of Best Director (won with Traffic). Luck keeps turning on his side with Ocean’s Eleven – Place your bets (2001), thriller with Clooney, Brad Pitt is Matt Damon by the wide critical-commercial consensus, defined as one of Soderbergh’s biggest takings. With this last work, the director enters the Olympus of directors specialized in crime movies – in particular heist films. In 2002 Soderbergh embarks on a new venture: digitally made, Full Frontal it is a film within a film and so on, which mixes the real with the fiction without any distinctive line. Subsequently he is offered to direct Insomnia (2002) with Al Pacino is Robin Williams, but gives up in favor of Christopher Nolan, while remaining in the ranks of producers. In the same year he made with Clooney Solaris (2002), adaptation of the novel of the same name from which theOpera of Andrei Tarkovsky in 1972.

Later he collaborates with the teacher Michelangelo Antonioni and Chinese Wong Kar-Wai in the collective film Eros (2004), divided into three episodes each of which directed by one of the directors and having sexual desire as its main subject. Also in 2004 the sequel was released in theaters Ocean’s Twelve, which, although it did not have the same collection as the previous one, confirmed its aptitude for robbery films. Soderbergh, however, is also known for his experiments – not always successful – like Bubble (2005), a film with a cast of non-professional actors, released simultaneously in cinemas, on the web, on TV and on DVD. Despite the distrust of the operators in the sector regarding especially this last directorial decision, Bubble has earned its creator the nomination as Best Director at the 2007 Independent Spirit Awards. Soderbergh concludes the Ocean trilogy with the second sequel. Ocean’s Thirteen (2007), the second highest grossing of his career that winks at the critics who had exalted his innate predisposition towards crime.

In 2008 the director is at the cinema with a diptych on Ernesto Che Guevara, Che – The Argentine (2008) and Che – Guerrilla (2008), starring Benicio del Toro. Eager to experiment again or perhaps just to shock, the filmmaker shoots the low-budget comedy-drama The Girlfriend Experience (2009) about a young escort, role for which I write the pornstar Sasha Gray, attracting not a few controversies. But Soderbergh knows how to be forgiven and in the same year he is at the cinema with The Informant (2009) – positively criticized – followed by the apocalyptic thriller Contagion (2011). In 2012 it hits the mark with Magic Mike, dramatic-musical film with a cast ranging from Channing Tatum – who had collaborated with the director already in Knockout – Showdown (2011) – a Matthew McConaughey and which is based on Tatum’s own stripper period. The latter together with Jude Law, Catherine Zeta-Jones is Rooney Mara goes to make up the cast of Side effects (2013), psychological thriller that has a good result both at the box office and among critical opinions.
