BIOGRAPHY OF VÍCTOR ERICE

Director, screenwriter. He was born in the Basque municipality of Carranza, but finished his studies in Madrid. After having studied Political Science and Economics at the University, in 1961 he enrolled in the School of Cinema, graduating three years later in directing with the short film “Los días perdidos”. He began working as a film critic, publishing articles in the magazines “Cuadernos de Arte y pensamento” and “Nuestro cine”, and later began his career as a director, first signing some short films and then, in 1969, the episodic film, “Los desafíos “, made together with Rafael Azcona, José Luis Egea and Claudio Guerín. The film, produced by Elías Querejeta – who will also accept to produce other subsequent films of his – does not receive much acclaim among the public but receives the appreciation of critics at the San Sebastian Festival which awards it the Silver Shell. His first feature film “The spirit of the beehive”, directed in 1973, obtained an unexpected positive impact on both critics and audiences, consecrating the director as one of the most relevant emerging artists of the new Spanish cinema. The film received various awards, including the Conchiglia d’Oro at the 1973 San Sebastian Film Festival and, in 1977, the ACE Award for Best Director. The meeting with the writer Adelaida García Morales turns out to be fundamental. Their friendship will last several years and will result in an artistic collaboration whose culmination will be the making of the feature film “El Sur” (1982), the director’s second work, based on a story by Morales published in the editorial “Anagrama” and considered by many like his best work. However, during its making, the film encounters various difficulties, mainly due to interference by the producer Elías Querejeta, who does not allow him to finish the film as he pleases. With the third film, “The Sun of the Quince” (1992), which focuses on the life of the Spanish painter Antonio López, the director arrives at the documentary, winning prizes at the 46th Cannes Film Festival. In fact, he won the FIPRESCI Prize and the Jury Prize, as well as the nomination for the Palme d’Or. Despite not having many films to his credit, the author is regarded as one of the most talented Spanish directors and can boast a very personal and original artistic vision. The small number of his films is partly due to the numerous problems encountered with production companies, which are not interested in highly authorial films such as his works. In 2002 he was among the twelve directors of the episodic film “Ten Minutes Older”, with the episode “Lifeline”. In 2010 he was called to be part of the jury of the 63rd Cannes Film Festival.
