VICTOR FLEMING’S BIOGRAPHY
Film director. Despite his notoriety in the world of cinema, he begins to deal with it only by chance. In fact, first he devoted himself to car racing and, later, he was a well-known motorcycle and airplane pilot. He initially worked as an assistant to Allan Dwan, DW Griffith and Douglas Fairbanks. He made his co-directorial debut on Fairbanks’ “When the Clouds Roll by” (1920), and his first film as a director was “The Mollycoddle” (1921). He deals with major film projects, such as “Red Hot Romance” (1922), written by Anita Loos, and works on a version of “Lord Jim” (1925). In the period in which he lends his work at Paramount he stands out for “Mantrap” (1926) and “Hula” (1927), in which the performances of Clara Bow and Emil Jannnings stand out respectively. Also worth mentioning are “The Way of All Flesh” (1927), the westerns “The Rough Riders” (1927) and “The Virginian” (1929), a film that brought fame to Gary Cooper. For the production house MGM he deals with the classics “Red Dust” (1932) and “Bombshell” (1933), a harsh satire on Hollywood and ranges between different genres, from comedy to biographical works, with the films “The White Nun” (1933), “Treasure Island” (1934), “Captains courageous” (1937) and “Arditi aria” (1938). In 1939 he achieved notoriety with two of the greatest hits of all time: “The Wizard of Oz” and “Gone with the Wind”, for which he won the Oscar for directing. The final part of the latter is shot by Sam Wood who replaces Fleming suffering from a nervous breakdown. Fleming himself had replaced George Cukor who had only directed the film for a few days. “Gone with the Wind” also wins the Oscar for best film, color photography, editing, screenplay, scenography and special effects ‘ante litteram’. The director also deserves to be considered the Oscar to the protagonist Vivien Leigh and to the supporting actress Hattie McDaniel (first Oscar in the history of cinema awarded to a black actress). which will be remembered for a long time, including “Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde” (1941), and “Giovanna D’Arco” (1948). Fleming, known as Mr. Macho, ironically directed very strong female personalities: Clara Bow, Jean Harlow and Ingrid Bergman.
