What to watch: Celebrate the pride with Billy Porter, Miley Cyrus, Kermit the Frog and more

i carry you with me

Whatever your entertainment needs, we’ve got you (and hopefully your mind) back with Queerty’s weekly ‘Culture Club’ column featuring some of the highlights from new releases, streaming shows, classics to. review and what to drink while you watch.

The Step-Out: I carry you with me

Director Heidi Ewing’s highly acclaimed drama finally kicks off big this week, offering a beautiful and uplifting story to wrap up Pride Month. i carry you with me uses an unusual documentary-narrative hybrid to tell the story of Ivan and Gerardo (Armando Espitia and Christian Vázquez), a gay Mexican couple who dreams of moving to the United States, albeit illegally. There’s just one problem: Ivan has a son from a previous relationship. A return to Mexico could mean separation from the couple forever, or worse, jail or forced eviction. But can the couple ask a son they barely know to come to the United States?

Ewing, in her narrative debut, proves to be a kind and empathetic director. The film does not make any didactic statement about the current migration crisis in North America. For Ivan and Gerardo, who emigrated some 20 years ago, the lack of a legal asylum procedure and the threat of violence forced them to leave immediately. The love of the couple provides a tender anchor to the story, and Espitia and Vázquez give believable and passionate performances that make us cheer on the couple. It’s a gorgeous, humanizing look at an ongoing mess, with a delicious dash of gay.

The Catch: Lady Boss: The Jackie Collins Story

Love novelist Jackie Collins, sister of Dynasty Joan Collins – became a household name in the 1980s thanks to her spooky bestsellers that focused on beautiful, rich women having a whole parcel sex. Go figure Collins has also built a gay fan base, both for his visions of glamor and empowering women… and for their campy insolence. lady boss brings Collins’ personal life to the fore, recounting her abusive childhood, her own attempts at an acting career (not to mention the plastic surgeries she underwent to improve her casting prospects), and her maturity in the midst of the elite from Hollywood. The emerging portrait portrays Collins with a new level of intelligence and business acumen, someone who isn’t afraid to write veiled versions of his famous friends as characters, a key to his status as a bestseller. . She also became something of a sex instructor – including, yes, the ways of gay sex – at a time when the subject was still taboo. Interesting, fun and very entertaining, we suggest you spend an evening with lady boss for one simple reason: the real Jackie Collins is the greatest character she has ever created.

Premieres June 27 on CNN.

The event: Billy Porter anime 5B

Queer titan Billy Porter celebrates his pride this weekend with a special screening of the documentary 5B. For those who remember, we actually named 5B the best film of 2019; that it was totally ignored on the awards circuit still infuriates us. The film tells the story of the first AIDS service in San Francisco, told by the courageous activists and health professionals who worked there. The film also recalls the ugly fighting over how and if AIDS patients should even receive treatment, chronicling the lawsuits of doctors and nurses for refusing to work with AIDS patients and the political battles that followed.

The story of 5B also echoes current debates on a certain other the viral plague, its treatment, the duty of health care providers and political demagogues who want to use it as a corner problem. For this reason, Porter will host a special panel discussion after the film to discuss how AIDS foreshadowed the COVID-19 crisis, the health disparity gaps, and what LGBTQ people can do to bring more to the table. equity in health care. Where we are from 5B should be mandatory for every living queer person. That Porter and his company set up a super relevant context in which to show it only underscores that distinction.
