BIOGRAPHY OF WILLIAM FRIEDKIN
Director, screenwriter and producer. He was born in Chicago into a modest family whose pillar was his mother Rachel, a nurse. The passion for cinema was born when Friedkin was struck by Orson Welles’ “Fourth power”. At the age of 16 William began working for WGN, a Chicago television station, where he made several documentaries and over 2000 hours of live programs. He makes himself known with the documentary “The People Versus Paul Crump”, with which he reopens the case of a black man sentenced to death for a robbery. In 1967 he was offered the cinematographic direction of the music producer “Good Times” interpreted by the singing duo Sonny & Cher. His subsequent films “That night invented the striptease” (1968), The Birthday Party (1968) and “Party for the birthday of dear friend Harold” (1970) are only the prelude to the great success he obtained in 1971 with “The arm. violent of the law “, winner of five Oscars (Best Film, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Non-original Screenplay and Best Editing) as well as numerous international awards including the David di Donatello for best foreign film. In the wake of the successes obtained, Friedkin founded the production company ‘The Director’s Company’ with Francis Ford Coppola and Peter Bogdanovich, which soon dissolved. Since 1998, the year in which he made his debut staging Alban Berg’s Woyzeck at the Teatro Comunale in Florence, he has successfully dedicated himself to directing Amatissimo operas in France and Italy, especially from the younger generations, he has received tributes and awards at festivals. from all over the world, culminating with the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement at the 70th Venice Film Festival in 2013. He has two children, Cedric and Jack. He was married to French actress Jeanne Moreau and to English actress Lesley-Ann Down.
