Is Pixar about to introduce its first transgender character?

Pixar short film ‘Out’

Delicious news from animation studio Pixar: The Disney-owned production house has launched a search for a teenage actress to “authentically” express a trans and young character in an upcoming project.

Pixar has yet to officially comment on the news, other than announcing a brief character description and casting criteria. The casting notice has been verified as genuine by the Trans March group.

“Pixar is playing a youth voiceover role for an upcoming animation project,” the notice read. “The character, Jess, is a 14-year-old transgender girl. She is compassionate, funny and always supports you. We are looking for actresses aged 12 to 17 who:

  • Are enthusiastic, outgoing, funny and energetic
  • Feel comfortable acting in front of a microphone
  • Can authentically represent a 14 year old transgender girl

If you know of a child who fits the description and you want to audition for the role, their legal guardian should contact: [email protected]”

The news comes at a pivotal cultural moment for transgender rights. In recent weeks, several states have passed anti-transgender bills that ban doctors from treating trans youth, ban trans participation in sports, or allow school officials to inspect the genitals of suspected transgender students. .

Pixar featured a gay character in their film Onward last year, voiced by queer actress Lena Waithe.

Last year the studio released Out, an adorable gay-themed short timed around Pride Month.
