BIOGRAPHY OF ALEKSEI BALABANOV
Film director. He studies languages at Gorky University and later works for some time as a translator of the Soviet army. He begins to be a director in his hometown, in the Sverdlovsk Film Studios. In the 1980s, he began making his first feature films, basing his stories on the stories of Daniil Kharms and Franz Kafka. The film that made him famous above all at home but also abroad is ‘Brother’, presented at the Cannes Film Festival in 1997, and in 2002 his sequel ‘Brother 2’ (‘Big brother’), through which he describes the bitter and difficult reality of post-communist Russian society. Five years later he shoots ‘Cargo 200’, set in the full Soviet decline of the late 1980s.
