BIOGRAPHY OF GIAN VITTORIO BALDI

Director, screenwriter, producer, editor. After the Second World War he went to live with his family in Milan where, after graduating, he began writing as a film critic for ‘Il Sole 24 Ore’. In the mid-1950s he joined Rai, where he worked for four years, and began working as a documentary filmmaker. He made numerous and award-winning short films of the cinema-truth genre, including “Il pianto delle zitelle” (1958, Golden Lion in Venice) and “La casa delle Vedove” (1960, Golden Lion in Venice and Oscar candidate ). After directing the episode “La prova d’amore” of the film “The Italians and the love” (1961, conceived by Cesare Zavattini and composed of eleven episodes directed by various directors) in 1962 he made his first feature film “Luciano una burnt life “(the film will be released only in 1967). In 1960 he founded the ‘Italian Documentary Institute’ which in 1964 became the ‘International Documentary Association’. The following year he founded the production company ‘IDI Cinematografica’ with which, in addition to producing the films he himself made, he financed the production of films by directors such as Pier Paolo Pasolini, Jean-Marie Straub, Nelo Risi and Robert Bresson. In the mid-60s an important collaboration with Roberto Rossellini begins which will last until the master’s death. In 1987 the ‘Cinémateque de Paris’ dedicated a festival to him. He teaches at the Faculty of Literature and Philosophy of the University of Bologna. In 2002 he went back behind the camera with “The Storm”.
