BIOGRAPHY OF BERNARDO BERTOLUCCI
Film director. Son of the poet and literary critic Attilio and Ninetta Giovanardi. His passion for cinema pushed him very young to make short films in 16 mm (“Death of a pig” and “The cableway”), shot in the house of Casarola on the Emilian Apennines, before his father Attilio introduced him to Pier Paolo Pasolini , who in 1961 wanted him as an assistant in his film “Accattone”. In 1962 he won the Viareggio Prize first work for the book in verse “In Search of Mystery” and made his directorial debut with “La Commare Secca”, which was followed in 1964 by “Before the Revolution” which gave him great notoriety at the age of 23. . Among his most famous films are “The Conformist” (1970), considered by many to be his masterpiece, and “Last Tango in Paris” (1972), for which he gets an Oscar nomination but which triggers terrible controversy because it is considered obscene. For the first time in the history of cinema, the film is burned at the stake with a sentence of the Supreme Court and it will be necessary to wait until February 17, 1987 to obtain a sentence of “non-obscenity” and have it reissued. With “Novecento”, Bertolucci engages in an epic historical metaphor, retracing 45 years of history and social struggles through the relationship between two boys, born at the turn of the new century in the same house but of two different social classes. Another great success of his is “The Last Emperor” (1987), winner of nine Oscars: direction, non-original screenplay, photography, editing, music, scenography, costumes and sound. In the film Bertolucci traces the life of the last Chinese emperor, Pu Yi, who ends his days as a gardener in a post-revolutionary Beijing. A prolific director, he was able to range from love films (Before the revolution, Last tango in Paris, Tea in the desert, The siege) to exercises in style (La commare Secca, Partner), from the epic (Novecento, The Last Emperor) to the social parable (The Conformist, The Spider’s Strategy, The Moon, The Tragedy of a Ridiculous Man). She made an initiatory journey into Buddhism (Little Buddha) and the sentimental education of the younger generation (I dance alone, The Dreamers). In 1988 she won two Oscars, two David di Donatello and two Golden Globes for directing and screenplay, shared with Mark Peploe, of The Last Emperor, the Palme d’Or at Cannes 1996 for I dance alone, a Silver ribbon for the direction in 1988 of The Last Emperor and in 1973 of Last Tango in Paris. In 1997 Locarno awarded him the Leopard of Honor and in 2007 he received the Golden Lion for the 75th year of the Venice Film Festival, during the 64th edition. his only brother, Giuseppe, is also a director and is married to Lucilla Alvano, a cinema teacher. His wife, Claire Peploe, of English descent, is a director and has a screenwriter brother, Mark. Cousin Giovanni, who passed away in 2005, was a producer.
