The NBC network announced that it had preemptively canceled the broadcast of the 2022 Golden Globes due to a lack of diversity in the electorate.
Variety reports that the network has chosen to cancel the telecast of the Globes in 2022, the awards voted by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. The network further said it would reconsider the possibility of airing the show in 2023 pending certain reforms of the HFPA.
“We continue to believe that the HFPA is engaged in meaningful reform,” NBC said in a statement. “However, a change of this magnitude takes time and work, and we are convinced that the HFPA needs time to get it right. As such, NBC will not be airing the 2022 Golden Globes. Assuming the organization executes its plan, we hope we will be able to air the show in January 2023. “

The news follows an explosive Los Angeles Times report that exposed questionable HFPA financial practices, as well as a lack of diversity. Of its only around 90 members, the HFPA has no black members in the world. The revelation prompted several major studios – including Netflix, Amazon and WarnerMedia – to boycott the show until the HFPA institutes reforms.
Although the HFPA is committed to reforming both its ranks and its business practices, the lack of a deadline played a major role in NBC’s decision to cancel the show. The cancellation also means the HFPA will miss the $ 60 million annual license fee usually paid by NBC in exchange for the broadcast rights to the show.
The cancellation comes amid mounting turmoil over the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. In addition to controversies surrounding the show’s legitimacy and the mainstream media boycott, actor Tom Cruise returned his three Golden Globe trophies to the HFPA, effectively refusing the awards.
