JOHN BOORMAN BIOGRAPHY
Although his parents were not Catholics, they had him studied by the Jesuits or, according to others, by the Salesians. He begins writing film criticism articles for women’s magazines and for the radio. He joined the BBC in 1955 as an assistant editor and in a few years became a director with a series of innovative documentaries. In 1965 he made his first film: ‘Having a Wild Weekend’ in which the ‘Dave Clark Five’ performed for the first time in an attempt to emulate the Beatles success of the previous year in ‘A Hard Day’s Night’. The film has little resonance but takes him to Hollywood where in 1967 he directed the action film with Lee Marvin ‘Without a moment of truce’ (Point Black) and in 1968 the dramatic ‘Duel in the Pacific’ (Hell in the Pacific). In those years new technologies are introduced in the cinema and Boorman uses them in the terrifying ‘A quiet weekend of fear’ (Deliverance) which has a nomination for directing and production. Reaches the top of the thriller genre with ‘The Exorcist 2: The Heretic’. He then devotes himself to historical reinterpretation with ‘Excalibur’ and to the story of an Amazonian tribe with ‘The Crystal Forest’. gets three nominations: Best Picture, Screenplay and Direction. He surprised critics but in 1990 the public liked his’ Where the Heart is’ very different from his style but comparable to Lleo the Last ‘(1970), another film outside the box of English cinema. He has two acting children who he has used in many films: Katrine born in London in 1958 and Charley born in 1966 in Wimbledon.
