CHARLES BRONSON BIOGRAPHY

Actor. The son of Lithuanian immigrants, his father works in the coal mines and the same fate befalls all his fifteen children. Even Charles, in fact, despite being the only one who manages to complete high school, initially follows in his father’s footsteps to help the family. During the Second World War he served in the aviation, but at the end of the conflict, returning home, he decided to resume his studies. He enrolled in an art school in Philadelphia and became passionate about acting after joining a local theater company taking care of the sets and occasionally acting in small roles. At the end of the 1940s, determined to pursue an acting career, he joined the company of the Pasadena Playhouse. One of his teachers suggests his name to director Henry Hataway, who chooses him for a part in “Commander Johnny” (1951). Since that time he has appeared in numerous films and also in several television productions, generally playing the roles of a bandit, native Indian or convict, due to his distinctive slit-eyed face. Until the mid-1950s he appears in the titles (when credited) with his real name, later he takes that of Charles Bronson’s art and some rumors say that the surname derives from the ‘Bronson Gate’ of the Paramount Studios on Bronson Avenue. In 1958 he was offered the role of the adventurous photographer Mike Kovac in the successful TV series “Man With a Camera” by Paul Landres, which brought him to the attention of the public so much so that the same manufacturer of the cameras used in the series chose him as testimonial of their advertising campaigns. In the same year he played the first film starring roles in “When hell breaks loose”, by Kenneth G. Crane and “The law of the machine gun” by Roger Corman. In 1960 he is among the protagonists of “The Magnificent Seven” by John Sturges (where he often steals the show from the well-known Yul Brynner and Steve McQueen) who in turn calls him again in 1963 to play the claustrophobic lieutenant who digs the tunnel in “The Great Escape” (again alongside Steve McQuenn). In 1967 Robert Aldrich chose him for the role of the heroic soldier Wladislaw in “The Dirty Dozen” (alongside Lee Marvin and Ernest Borgnine). Although he manages to make the most of these opportunities by giving excellent tests on the screen, he is offered almost exclusively secondary roles, so he decides to try his luck in Europe (in the wake of Clint Eastwood and Lee Van Cleef) and finally reaches success in 1968. Spain, France and Italy see him as the protagonist of films such as “The cannons of San Sebastian” (1968, by Henri Varneuil), “Technique of a robbery” (by Jean Harman alongside Alain Delon) and above all “Once upon a time there was West “by Sergio Leone, where he plays the half-caste avenger ‘Harmonica’, embryo of what will be the role that will mark the rest of his career at home: the architect Paul Kersey of” The executioner of the night “by Michael Winner (1974) . Such is the success generated by this lone avenger characters who plays him in four sequels (1982,1985,1987 and 1994) or plays several variations including “Murphy’s Law” (1986) by J. Lee Thompson. Among the latest appearances on the big screen is Sean Penn’s directorial debut “Lonely Wolf” (1991), while more frequent are those for television. He often starred alongside him the second wife Jill Ireland, married in 1968 The two remained united until her death – a cancer patient – in 1990 and had a daughter, Zuleika. Two other children, Tony and Suzanne, were born from their first marriage (with Harriet Tendler from ’49 to ’67). In December 1998, he married a third time, with actress Kim Weeks. In 2001, news of his alleged Alzheimer’s disease was falsely disclosed. He died at the age of 81 at Cedars-Sinai Medical Ce
