BIOGRAPHY OF YUL BRYNNER
Actor. A man of strong temperament and exotic charm, before his debut in the cinema he was a globetrotter out of necessity, a trapeze artist in Paris (in a fall he suffered serious injuries), a man of toil in the theater, a listless student at the Sorbonne. He left for the United States in 1940 with the Chechov theater company and became employed in the war propaganda offices of the American army during the Second World War. He had two nationalities, the Russian-Gypsy by birth and the American for professional reasons. in the cinema it happens in ’49 with Laszlo Benedek’s “The Port of New York”, but the real success arrives on Broadway with the musical comedy “The king and I” (1951) in which he has the stroke of genius to become bald . Five years later he plays the film version directed by Walter Lang, in the role of the exotic king of Siam with whom he won the Oscar in 1956. His character is linked to other blockbusters: “Solomon and the Queen of Sheba” (1959) by King Vidor, with Lollobrigida, where he replaced Tyron Power who died during filming; “The Ten Commandments” (1956) by Cecil Blount De Mille, in the role of Pharaoh Ramesses. Also in 1956 he played the part of the prince in “Anastasia” by Anatole Litvac, with Ingrid Bergaman. Other important films are “Once again with sentiment” and “Parcel a surprise” both from 1959 and directed by Donen; Sturges’ “The Magnificent Seven” (1960); Wilson’s “Invitation to a Shooting” (1964). In the 1970s he begins to interpret science fiction films that are passing in Serie A such as Crichton’s “The World of Robots” (1973) and “The Adventurers of Planet Earth” (1975 ) by Clouse. In 1983 he was diagnosed with lung cancer and he died on October 10, 1985 in New York. Before dying, the actor records a violent attack on smoking, the cause of his terrible illness, which airs by his will as a commercial against tobacco companies.
