BIOGRAPHY OF GINO CERVI

Actor. Gino Cervi is a milestone in the Italian show business. Multiform actor has managed to alternate cinema and theater (his interpretation of Cyrano was famous) always with great success. His career lasted 40 years, but his most famous characters, which gave him international fame after the war, are: the communist mayor Peppone in the five films inspired by Guareschi’s Don Camillo and the character of Commissioner Maigret that the actor plays for a series of dramas for Italian television. His interpretation of the character is so successful that it follows a film “Maigret a Pigalle (1967), by Mario Landi. Thanks to the human charge of these characters that Cervi manages to interpret, also aided by his portly physique and good-natured face, in the heart of the public and continues to be remembered with affection. The son of a theatrical critic of “Il Resto del Carlino”, he made his debut in 1924, working with the major Italian theater companies of the period prior to World War II. plays by Falstaff or Cardinal Lambertini who was also represented on the screen in 1955 with the white spirit of Giorgio Pastina. The first film role came in 1932 with “Frontiere” by Gennaro Righelli. In 1940 he plays two dramatic films “Tristi amori” by Carmine Gallone and “La peccatrice” by Palermi, in which Cervi plays the role of an insensitive and respectable accountant. Other interpretations include Mario Soldati’s “Le miserie del signor Travet” (1945), for which he had the first of two Silver Ribbons; Antonioni’s “The Lady without Camellias” (1953); “Termini Station” (1953) by De Sica; Bolognini’s comedian “Guard, chosen guard, brigadier and marshal” (1956); the grotesque “Anni Roarenti” (1962) by Zampa; “Long night of ’43” (1960) by Vancini, where he sketches the figure of a fascist hierarch. In 1953 he obtained the second Silver Ribbon for all his interpretations. His voice acting activity should not be forgotten. He voiced the likes of Orson Welles in “King of Kings”, Clark Gable in “It Happened One Night”, James Mason in “Pandora” and James Stewart in “Harvey”. Gino Cervi died on January 3, 1974 in Castiglione della Pescaia.
