BIOGRAPHY OF CLAUDE CHABROL
Director and producer. Son of a pharmacist and musicologist, hero of the resistance, he was born in Paris but grew up in Creuse, in the small village of Sardent, where his mother comes from. Magical place for him at the age of 12, already a keen cinephile, he will found there the first film club in the country and, later, he will choose to set his debut film there. Graduated in Literature in Paris, he began to collaborate with the specialized magazines in cinema ‘Arts’ and ‘Cahiers du cinéma’ of which he is a moderate member who avoids controversy. In 1957 together with Erc Rohmer he published the first French book on Hitchcock, a director who, together with Renoir and Lang, is one of his favorites, after all he is fond of detective novels. That same year, having received an inheritance, he decides to improvise as producer for “Le coup du berger” which he wrote together with director Jacques Rivette inspired by the Italian film “Accadde al commissariato” by Giorgio Simonelli. He also produced Godard’s first feature film and his first film as a director which, in 1958, actually inaugurated the Nouvelle Vague, “Le beau Serge” and won the Silver Leopard at the Locarno Film Festival for best direction. However, his critical independence and self-irony keep him above the trends and his is a voice that always remains out of the chorus. Since then she has directed over fifty films including “Cousins” (1959, Golden Bear at the Berlin Film Festival), “Easy Women” (Les Bonnes femmes, 1960, which remains her favorite), “A bargain of women “(Une affaire de femmes, 1988),” Madame Bovary “(1991),” The darkness in the mind “(La Cérémonie, 1995). Starting from 1978 with “Violette Nozière” Chabrol formed a sort of artistic partnership with Isabelle Huppert who over the decades has given life to a series of female characters – which to define disturbing is little – to which the actress has provided the ability to maintain a angelic face in carrying out efferracy, sometimes provided by the news, but always reinvented by the director in a credible and engaging way.
