JOAN CRAWFORD BIOGRAPHY
Actress. The result of a marriage that ended before her birth, little Lucille grows up with her mother, a woman who is forced to work hard to get by and who is unable to sustain lasting romantic relationships. At sixteen she has already met three fathers, one of whom will give her the name of Billie Cassin. In 1915 she moved to Kansas City with her mother and was forced to do various jobs (laundress, shop assistant, waitress) in order to pay for her studies. In the early 1920s, she was expelled from Stephens College in Columbia, Missouri, an elegant college for girls. She loves to dance and in 1923 she wins a dance competition that leads her to Chicago, Detroit and New York as a row dancer. On January 1, 1925 he decides to try his luck in Hollywood. Shortly after her arrival, she is noticed by MGM agents and gets a six-month contract. After playing the stunt double for Norma Shearer in Monta Bell’s “Lady of the night” (Crawford played from behind when Shearer was simultaneously on set, supporting a double role) and other minor particles, the first starring role arrives in “The three graces” (Sally, Irene and Mary) by E. Goulding and immediately stands out for his safe and refined way of acting. In 1928, success came with “Our dancing doughters” by Harry Beaumaunt and became one of the highest paid divas in Hollywood. The advent of sound is not a problem for her who is endowed with an expressive and pleasant voice. His first “spoken” film is Jack Conway’s “Untamed” (Untamed) in 1929. With ambition and perseverance he manages to build a winning image: a lean body with strong shoulders in evidence, plump lips highlighted. from fiery lipsticks, large eyes highlighted by thin brows. Metro costume designer Adrian designs a line of clothes for her that will remain in fashion for twenty years. She abandons the roles as a naive and lively girl and engages with increasingly complex and dramatic characters reaping success after success especially in the films she starred alongside Clark Gable. Towards the 40s the decline seems to approach, but once again it is able to renew itself and in “A woman’s face” by George Cukor he gives what is perhaps his best interpretation. In 1945 she received her only Academy Award for Best Actress for Michael Curtiz’s “Mildred’s Novel” (Mildred Pierce). Slowly her fame fades and she is relegated to increasingly minor roles until in 1962 she shoots alongside her eternal rival Bette Davis the film “What happened to Baby Jane?” (What ever happened to Baby Jane?) By Robert Aldrich, the last convincing evidence before his retirement in 1974. In his forty-year career he has made more than eighty films and has been able to transform his image several times, going from comedy to drama , from musical to western. His love life was also very eventful. Many relationships, five marriages: with James Welton (1923/24), with the actors Douglas Fairbanks Jr. (1929/33), Franchot Tone (1935/39), Philip Terry (1942/46) and the last with Pepsi Cola president Alfred Nu Steele from 1955 until his death in 1959 (the actress will take his place on the company’s board of directors). Adopts four children: Christine, Christopher and twins Cathy and Cindy. In the book “Mommy dear” (from which in 1981 the film of the same name by Frank Perry was made with Fay Dunaway in the role of Crawford), Christine describes the terrible cruelties that hid behind the facade of a relationship with her children that was always serene and happy, painting a merciless portrait of his mother. After retiring from the stage she is increasingly addicted to vodka and devoted to Christian Science. He fell ill with cancer and died on May 10, 1977, at the age of 69. Of his considerable inheritance, nothing goes to his two children Christine and Christopher “for reasons they know well”. Has scr
