It’s Pride Month, and American embassies around the world have displayed pride flags to mark the occasion.

One person who isn’t happy with this is Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA), who took to Newsmax last night to remind everyone she finds it inappropriate.

Posting a link to her appearance on Twitter, she tweeted: “The only flag that should be flown above US embassies is the US flag. That’s why I’m a proud cosponsor of @RepJeffDuncan’s Old Glory Only Act! “

In his interview with Greg Kelly, Greene said, “The American flag is the only flag that represents every American. We don’t need a political identity policy. We don’t need the Democratic Party to make one group bigger than the other. The only flag that should fly over one of our US embassies, over one of our federal buildings, is Old Glory, the magnificent Stars and Stripes. “

Last year, the U.S. Embassy in Seoul, South Korea hung a Black Lives Matter sign outside, next to an LGBTQ Pride flag. Greene then called the Black Lives Matter movement a “national terrorist organization”.

“The LGBTQ flag is not a flag that should be flown over our government buildings either,” Greene continued. “The American flag represents all Americans and it is the only flag that should ever be flown. Period. There is no argument about it.

In February, Queerty reported that Greene was co-sponsoring a bill that would ban the flying of any flag other than the star-spangled banner outside of U.S. embassies and other consular posts.

The bill, House Resolution 85, is sponsored by South Carolina Republican Representative Jeff Duncan. He has introduced the legislation, dubbed the Old Glory Only Act, several times before, but it has failed to make progress on several occasions.

Earlier this week, Duncan again reaffirmed his opposition to Rainbow Flag Embassies and revealed that three other GOP lawmakers had signed on as co-sponsors. Representatives Louie Gohmert (R-TX), Rick Crawford (R-AR) and Brian Mast (R-FL.) Join Greene and Matt Gaetz (R-FL).

Despite this, political commentators believe the legislation is unlikely to be debated, let alone passed by the Democratic-controlled House of Representatives.

US embassies began to fly the LGBTQ rainbow flag under the Obama administration. The Trump administration has banned embassies from flying the flag on official flagpoles, but has not objected to the flag being hung on other parts of the building.

The Biden administration rescinded Trump’s ban, allowing the flag to fly between the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia on May 17 and the end of Pride Month in late June.

Advocates in countries where it is particularly difficult to be openly LGBTQ have previously explained that they find it encouraging to see embassies flying rainbow flags, especially in places like Russia where there are laws prohibiting the so-called “gay propaganda”.

Among those who flown the flag this week was the U.S. Embassy in the Vatican, prompting a response from Representative Duncan, author of the Old Glory Act.

“Disrespectful, inappropriate, and that’s exactly why I tabled the Old Glory Only Act. The only flag that should fly in our embassies is the flag of the United States of America.”
