BIOGRAPHY OF ANDREA CRISANTI
Set designer and costume designer. Son of the footwear designer Franco Crisanti. After his initial classical studies, his passion and talent for drawing and painting led him to take the artistic maturity and then specialize in scenography at the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome. In the early 1950s he began attending the studios of the artists Guido La Regina and Giovanni Consolazione and exhibiting his paintings in various exhibitions. Meanwhile, also passionate about theater and cinema, he begins his cinematic adventure by collaborating with set designers such as Mario Garbuglia, Mario Chiari and Enzo Del Prato. But, above all, he comes into contact with the set designer Gianni Polidori, with whom he will work assiduously as an assistant and art director. In 1962 he signed the sets for Riccardo Freda’s film “Maciste all’ferno”, with which he started his intense activity as a set designer – and, in some cases, also as a theatrical costume designer – which over the years will lead him to work with directors such as Lucio Chiavarelli, Andrea Camilleri, Mario Scaccia, Antonio Racioppi, Sergio Tofano, Gianni Puccini, Sergio Corbucci and Sergio Leone. 1969 marks the important meeting with Francesco Rosi who will give life to a fruitful artistic partnership: “Men against” (1970), “The Mattei case” (1972), “Lucky Luciano” (1973), “Excellent cadavers” (1976 ), “Christ stopped at Eboli” (1979), “Three brothers” (1981), “Chronicle of a death foretold” (1987), “Forget Palermo” (1990) and “The truce” (1997). The eighties and nineties see him, then, alongside other great masters: Marco Bellocchio, Damiano Damiani, Michelangelo Antonioni, Andrej Tarkovskij, Franco Zeffirelli, Gianni Amelio and, in particular, Giuseppe Tornatore. For him, in addition to “Nuovo Cinema Paradiso” (1988) and “Stanno tutti bene” (1990), he also designs the sets for “Una pura formalità” (1994) for which he receives his first David di Donatello as best scenographer. The new millennium still sees him as the protagonist of numerous scenographic projects for Sergio Citti, Pasquale Squitieri, Emidio Greco (“The Council of Egypt”, 2002, which earned him the Silver Ribbon), Michele Soavi, the Taviani brothers, Theo Angelopoulos and Ferzan Özpetek. The collaboration with the Turkish-born director sees his signature in “La Finestra di Fronte” (2003), “Cuore sacro” (2005, for which he obtains the second David di Donatello), “Mine vaganti” (2010) and “Magnifica presence “(2012), the last effort before passing away at the age of 76. During his long career he has also lent his work for the sets – and sometimes the costumes – of important national and international commercials, signed by well-known Italian and foreign directors. Starting from 1990 he also began his teaching activity at the Experimental Center of Cinematography, first for the scenography course, then as a reference teacher for the scenography course and finally, from 2010, as principal of the National School of Cinema. He has also taught at the Academy of Costume and Fashion and at the European Institute of Design in Rome, as well as at the “La Lanterna Magica” Institute of Cinema in L’Aquila. He was one of the founding members of the ASC Association (Italian Association of Set Designers Costume Designers), of which he was President from 1995 to 2005. He was a member of the EFA (European Film Academy). Alongside his activity in the world of entertainment, he was also active as a designer and in the design of interior architecture and events for numerous private clients.
