BIOGRAPHY OF ALAIN DELON
Actor. As a child he reveals a rebellious character, due to a difficult family situation, and is regularly expelled from all the schools he attends. After working as a waiter, salesman and porter, at 17 he enlisted as a paratrooper in the French expeditionary force in Indochina. He returned to France in 1956, and the following year made his film debut with Yves Allegret’s thriller, ‘Godot’. In 1960 Luchino Visconti chooses him for the role of the protagonist in ‘Rocco and his brothers’ which makes him famous all over the world. In the following years he frequently worked in Italy with the most important directors, including Michelangelo Antonioni (‘L’eclisse’, 1962), and he interpreted fundamental works such as ‘Il Gattopardo’, again with Visconti (1963), establishing himself as an actor from extraordinary charm. In those years he was linked to the Austrian actress Romy Schneider, who left in 1964 to marry Nathalie Barthelemy, mother of her first child Anthony. With her, Delon shoots ‘Frank Costello angel face’ by Jean-Pierre Melville (1967). However, relations with Schneider remain very friendly: it is he who proposes her to Jacques Demy for ‘The swimming pool’ (1968), as it is always he, through his bodyguards, who protects her from photographers after the tragic death of her son. In 1968 his name ends up in the newspapers when a story of sex and drugs involves French entrepreneurs and political personalities but he manages to prove his strangeness. In the same years his friendship-rivalry with another great French actor, Jean-Paul Belmondo, became famous. The cinema successes continued throughout the seventies, among others: ‘The first night of quiet’ by Valerio Zurlini, (1972) and ‘Mr. Klein ‘by Joseph Losey (1976). After the divorce from Barthelemy, he remains for a long time linked to the actress Mireille Darc, and subsequently to the young Anne Parillaud, Luc Besson’s ‘Nikita’. His fame remained unchanged even in the Eighties, among the films he shot: ‘Un amore di Swann’ by Volker Schlöndorff, (1985). At 55 he became the father of a little girl, Anoucka, with his new young wife Rosalie, a Dutch model. A few years later she has another son, Alain-Fabien, and almost at the same time her first son Anthony makes him a grandfather. During the 1995 Berlin Film Festival he was awarded the Golden Bear for Lifetime Achievement. In an interview with Paris Match in September 2005, he declares that he feels very lonely and depressed after being abandoned by his partner, estranged with his two young children, and that he will not let God choose the moment of his death. Later he must then cancel the “Roller Coaster” theater tour which would have helped him out of his loneliness, to undergo cardiovascular exams in a Paris clinic.
