BIOGRAPHY OF JONATHAN DEMME
Film director. Son of an actress and hotelier, Jonathan spends the first years of his life in New York, then, at the age of 15, he moves to Miami with his family. At first he dreams of becoming a veterinarian, so he enrolled at the University of Florida and became a film critic for the university magazine. After leaving his studies, he tries to make his way into the world of cinema. He works as an advertising agent, then gets hired at United Artist. He moves to London and, upon his return, comes into contact with director Roger Corman who takes him with him to New World. After having collaborated in the production of some films with Corman, Jonathan embarked on a career as a director and made his debut in 1974 with “Femmine in gabbia”. In 1979 he shoots the thriller “The Sign of the Hannan” and the following year “Once I met a billionaire” which receives the title of best film of the year from the New York Film Critics Circle. Gathered acclaim from the general public in 1987 with “Something overwhelming” and with “A happy widow but not too much” (1988), but his greatest success is “The silence of the innocents” (1991). The film won the Oscar for best director and the Silver Bear at the Berlin Film Festival and gives great notoriety to director and lead actress (alongside Anthony Hopkins) Jodie Foster. The success of “The Silence of the Lambs” was followed in 1993 by “Philadelphia”, played by Tom Hanks, who obtained the Oscar for best leading actor. The film also won the Oscar for Best Score, by Bruce Springsteen. Demme has made several music videos over the years, not only for Springsteen himself, but also for Neil Young and the New Order, which in turn are found in the soundtracks of his films. In 1984 he also directed a concert of Talking Heads, whose video – documentary, much appreciated, has the title of “Talking Heads. Stop Making Sense”. Among the works on the big screen, after “Philadelphia” we also remember “The Truth About Charlie” (2002), an unsuccessful remake of Stanley Doner’s film “Charade” (1963) with Cary Grant and Audey Hepburn and “The Agronomist” ( 2003), film – tribute to human rights activist Jean Dominique, presented as a special event at the 2003 Venice Film Festival. The director, sensitive to social issues, founded, in the late 1980s, “Filmakers United Against Apartheid “in support of Nelson Mandela, which was also joined by Bernardo Bertolucci and Woody Allen. He has been married twice, first to director and producer Evelyn Purcell and then to artist Joanne Howard, with whom he has three children.
