Fans of Disney’s live-action remake of Beauty and the Beast, beware: Disney + has just given the green light for a new limited series of live-action on villainous Lothario from the movie Gaston and his implied gay sidekick LeFou.
Deadline reports that actors Luke Evans and Josh Gad will reprise their roles as Gaston and LeFou, respectively, in a new prequel series that will follow the two characters in the lead-up to the events of Beauty and the Beast. Actress Briana Middleton will also appear in the series as LeFou’s half-sister, Tilly. Legendary composer Alan Menkin, who wrote the music for the film, will also produce and compose the show.

It goes without saying that details of the series’ plot remain scarce. The official announcement characterizes the series as following the three on an adventure together after shocking revelations from Tilly’s past.
“For anyone who has ever wondered how a brute like Gaston and an idiot like LeFou have become friends and partners, or how a mystical enchantress came to cast this fateful spell on the prince turned beast, this series will finally provide these answers … and provoke a whole new set of questions, ”said Gary Marsh, President and Creative Director, Disney Branded Television in the announcement.
We also have to hope that the series will dive a little more into LeFou’s love life. Press for Beauty and the Beast touted the film for featuring a gay character, later revealed as LeFou. Unfortunately, the film’s only reference to LeFou as a gay character was a photo of him dancing with another man. Critics of the film ridiculed the moment as queerbaiting.
With Gad also contributing to the writing credits for the show, we can only hope that he will show a little more love to his character on the show. Yep, that does mean some gay love.
The new untitled series will begin filming in 2022. The release date has yet to be announced.
